Somerset, NJ – For their efforts in
Wagner's last-second 23-22 win over Saint Francis U on Saturday, junior outside linebacker
Cam Gill was named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Defensive Player of the Week, while true freshman outside linebacker
Titus Leo, who also saw action at wide receiver on the day, is the league's Rookie of the Week.
Gill played a huge hand in Wagner's thrilling 23-22 comeback win over Saint Francis U on Saturday. For the game, the 6-3, 230-pound Georgia native registered a game-high nine tackles, including five solo stops, none bigger than a second-quarter strip-sack of SFU quarterback Bear Fenimore which was recovered by junior safety
Anthony Watkins. This turnover directly led to an eight-yard touchdown pass from graduate student quarterback
T.J. Linta to senior wide receiver
D'Erren Wilson with just 22 seconds left in the first half that gave the Seahawks a 10-0 lead at the break. Gill, who is tied for the No. 1 spot in all of FCS football with 8.0 sacks on the season, also added one quarterback hurry, in addition to limiting the Red Flash to a one-yard gain or less on six of his nine stops on the afternoon.
Making just his second collegiate appearance, the ultra-athletic, 6-4, 230-pound Leo logged eight tackles (four solo) during the triumph over Saint Francis. The true freshman, who saw time at both outside linebacker and wide receiver, in addition to appearing on several special teams units, was credited with one sack as well as a quarterback hurry. The Sheepshead Bay, NY nativeade two big plays that led to a three-and-out for the SFU offense in the later stages of the first quarter. After helping stop the ball carrier for a three-yard gain on first down, Leo broke up a pass on 3rd-and-7. The rookie was extremely active on defense during SFU's first possession of the second quarter, making five tackles on a drive that ended with a missed 45-yard field goal attempt. Leo brought the first half to a close by sacking QB Bear Fenimore near midfield.
For Gill, this marks his second NEC Defensive Player of the Week honor for his career and season, while Leo picks up his first league weekly honor.
In addition to the two weekly awards, the NECPrimePerformers list was completed by senior running back
Ryan Fulse. FCS football's leading rusher with 1,028 yards, the 5-11, 195-pound Floridian gutted out hard-fought 102 yards rushing on 30 carries, in addition to a 51-yard third-quarter reception that set up a Wagner touchdown.
After six consecutive weeks of football, Wagner will have a well-earned bye this week before traveling to defensive NEC champion Central Connecticut on Saturday, October 27. Kickoff that day between the Seahawks and the Blue Devils set for 12:00 p.m.
