Emmitsburg, MD – The Wagner women's basketball team netted the final seven points of the first half and was able to mount a comeback early in the second half to draw within six before the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers went on to pull away with a 79-56 victory on Saturday afternoon at Knott Arena.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 3-17 on the season, 1-8 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Mountaineers improve to 7-13 overall and 4-5 in league play.
Fifth-year senior forward
Sierra Clark poured in 20 of her game-high 22 points in the opening half before picking up foul trouble in the third quarter. Redshirt freshman guard
Taylah Simmons tallied all of her 13 points in the second half, while fellow redshirt freshman guard
Morgan Lenahan added 10 points on the afternoon.
The Mount outscored the Green & White, 22-13, in the quarter, which increased the lead to 17, 59-42 heading into the final stanza which sealed the victory.
Juliette Lawless was one of four Mountaineers to finish the game in double-figures with a team-best 21 points. Ashlee White and Katrice Dixon added 14 and 13 points, respectively, while Kayla Agentowicz chipped in ten points.
In a homecoming of sorts for Clark, who hails from nearby Hughesville, MD, the 5-11 forward narrowly missed her 12th double-double of the season, winding up with a team-high nine rebounds to go with her 22 points. Clark, who was recruited to and played for Wagner head coach
Heather Jacobs at Adelphi University where she went on to earn Division II All-American honors last season, is now averaging 18.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.
In Wagner's nine NEC games, the graduate student averages 21.4 points and 11.8 rebounds per outing. In 20 games overall, Clark has a total of 11 double-doubles, ten 20-point-plus games, two 30-point plus games, and 18 double-digit scoring efforts to her credit.
For the contest, Mount St. Mary's held a slim 42 percent to 39 percent in the overall shooting while they converted on 46.0 percent from three-point range. Wagner, who scored a majority of its points from the paint (34-22), was held to just 20.0 percent from the outside.
The Seahawks now return to Staten Island for a mini two-game homestand vs. local NEC rivals St. Francis Brooklyn and LIU Brooklyn. On Saturday, February 3, the Green & White host the Terriers in a 1:00 p.m. start before welcoming the Blackbirds at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 5. Both games can be seen live on NEC Front Row.
