Staten Island, NY – Wagner College Athletic Director
Walt Hameline has announced the addition of women's field hockey that will compete as a club team in the 2018-19 academic year before being elevated to Division I varsity status in 2019-2020.
With the addition of field hockey, the number of NCAA-sponsored sports offered by Wagner will increase to 24, comprised of 14 women's and 10 men's sports.
"We are extremely excited to establish a women's field hockey program here at Wagner," said Hameline. "Field hockey is a very competitive sport within our region of the country and one that will provide more opportunities for female student-athletes to benefit from competing in intercollegiate athletics," he added.
A fall sport, field hockey has been an NCAA sport since 1981. Currently, 79 NCAA Division I institutions sponsor field hockey.
Wagner will be seeking a conference affiliation in which to compete and a national search select a coach will begin shortly.
Field Hockey will be the fourth sport that Wagner has added in the last three years. In 2016-17, the Seahawks competed in women's fencing and men's water polo for the first time and last November, it was announced that Wagner will field its inaugural women's triathlon team in 2018-19.
