Monmouth University XC Season Kickoff Results
Thompson Park, NJ - In the first cross country meet of the 2017 season for the Wagner College men's cross country squad, the Seahawks placed fourth at the 2017 Monmouth University XC Season Kickoff 6K run.
The host Hawks took home top honors in the meet, followed by Seton Hall and Lafayette. The Seahawks finished ahead of Northeast Conference (NEC) rival St. Francis Brooklyn. Middlesex Community College and Drew University rounded out the seven-team field.
Sophomore
Jonathan Besselink (Kingston, Ontario/Holy Cross Catholic Secondary) was the overall top finisher for the Seahawks, crossing the finish line in seventh place with a time of a 19:12.7. This marks the second straight season in which the product of Kingston, Ontario has placed inside the top-10 at the meet.
Junior
Matthew Whalen (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East) placed 17th, with a time of 19:53.9, rounding out Wagner's top-20 performances.
Other notable finishes among the 60 total runners include sophomore
Nick Velez (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea), who crossed the finish line in 20:12.3 while senior
Joseph Abbatiello (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) placed among the top-35 with a time of 20:32.3.
The Seahawks will be back in action on September 8 as they travel to Hempstead, NY for the Hofstra University Multi-Meet.
