Men's Water Polo Goes 1-1 On Day Two Of The Princeton Invite

Princeton, NJ – The Wagner men's water polo team ended the Princeton Invite with a 2-1 mark after going 1-1 on the second day. After defeating Chapman University 14-12 in an early morning contest, the Green & White fell 15-9 to Brown University.

Wagner 14, Chapman 12
The Seahawks defeated Chapman University 14-12 in an even matchup behind four goals from junior transfer Teo Dadic (Dubrovnik, Croatia / Gimnazija Dubrovnik [Long Beach City College]).

The two teams ended the first quarter in a back-and-forth 3-3 deadlock. After the Panthers scored on a successful penalty shot, freshman driver András Bimbó-Szuhai (Oradeo, Romania/ Ady Endre Líceum) took advantage of an assist from freshman driver Jasmin Kolasinac (Belgrade, Serbia / King's College) to put the Green & White on the board. Sophomore driver Oscar Nomura (Irvine, CA / Irvine) and Kolasinac fired back-to-back markers as Chapman beat the clock with a late tally.

Wagner opened the second stanza with a 4-0 run ignited by senior utility Ciaran Wolohan (Manly, Australia / St. Aloysius College [Golden West College]). However, the Panthers rallied with two unanswered goals coming out of a timeout. Sophomore driver Matthew Miller (San Ramon, CA / California High) ended Chapman's offensive run, scoring on a power play opportunity. Nevertheless, the Panthers reached the back of the net twice more, tying the score 8-8 at the half.

Once again, the third quarter was a back-and-forth affair until Wolohan and junior utility Devin O'Donnell (Pointe-Claire, Quebec / Selwyn [San Diego Mesa College]) drained consecutive goals to give the Seahawks a 12-10 advantage entering the final eight minutes of play.

Dadic opened the final stanza with his third marker, giving the Green & White a 13-10 lead, its largest of the contest. Wagner's defense allowed its opponent to score twice more before the final buzzer, edging the Panthers 14-12 in a nonconference matchup.

Wagner 9, Brown 15
The Seahawks played an even first half with the nationally-ranked program before the Bears took off with a 6-0 run, beginning in the third quarter. Freshman driver Jasmin Kolasinac accounted for five of Wagner's nine goals as the Green & White fell 15-9 to No. 14 Brown University in the weekend finale.

The Bears took an early 2-0 lead in the opening quarter before sophomore driver Oscar Nomura drilled one into the back of the net off an assist from transfer goalie Cameron Woldt (San Diego, CA / Serra High School [San Diego Mesa College]) on a man-up opportunity. Kolasinac followed suit with two tallies, stealing the ball with just over a minute left in the quarter to drain his second goal of the quarter. However, Brown rebutted with a late strike, taking a 4-3 lead.

Wagner took its only lead of the game less than two minutes into the second stanza as Kolasinac opened the period with back-to-back markers. As the only Seahawk to score in the second quarter, Kolasinc tallied one more as Brown took a 7-6 lead entering intermission.

The Bears held Kolasinac scoreless in the second half as Nomura and senior captain Ciaran Wolohan combined for two tallies in the third quarter.

Entering the final stanza trailing 11-8, sophomore driver Aaron Leighton (Lake Forest, CA / El Toro) fired the Seahawks lone goal of the quarter as Brown tallied four markers in a 15-9 decision.

Wagner (3-4, 1-0) travels to league rival Bucknell for the 2017 Bison Invitation September 16-17. Although the second-year program will not face the Bison, it will see matchups with Mercyhurst, Gannon, University of Toronto, and Salem International.
