Somerset, NJ – The Northeast Conference (NEC) recognized its best and brightest from this past season with the announcement of the 2017 Spring Scholar-Athlete winners, a list that includes Wagner men's tennis junior
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep), who earned the Men's Tennis Co-Scholar Athlete award after completing the year with a 3.977 grade-point average while majoring in Government & Politics, in addition to fashioning an outstanding season on the court. Boyd shares this year's honor with Bryant's Matt Kuhar.
In becoming the first member of the Seahawks' men's tennis program ever to be named Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Boyd is Wagner's third 2016-17 recipient,
joining fellow spring honoree Brianna Tredway of the Wagner softball team, as well as swimming & diving team member
Katja Claesson,
who garnered Winter Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors back in April.
"Charlton has been a tremendous representative for the men's tennis program, in the classroom and on the tennis court," commented head coach
Jason Sinkoff. "He has extremely high standards for himself, and as captain, his actions have spread through the entire team. For the second straight year, we had the highest men's team GPA at Wagner and also earned the NEC Sportsmanship award which Charlton had a lot to do with the culture that is set with this team."
In 2016-17, Boyd compiled a 14-6 overall record and a 10-3 mark in dual matches while going 3-1 in conference tilts. The third-year Seahawk was 8-3 in Flight No. 6. A 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-District Team member while also earning 2016 Northeast Conference (NEC) All-Second Team honors, the Shreveport, LA native has posted a 48-21 singles record as he is the all-time Wagner career wins leader since the conference has kept track of stats starting in 2005.
Boyd, who served as team captain this season, holds a 50-24 career doubles record, while going 18-8 out of the No. 3 Flight position.
This past commencement, Boyd earned the Class of 2008 Scholarship and the Verrazano Memorial Prize at the 2017 Wagner College Undergraduate Awards ceremony.
