Teaneck, NJ – The Wagner College baseball team picked up a crucial 6-3 road victory over the
Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights on Sunday afternoon, winning the series in taking two out of three games on the weekend.
With the win, the Seahawks stand at 16-23 overall and 8-9 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play while the Knights fall to 12-26 and 8-10 in league play. With today's victory, the Seahawks pass FDU in the league standings, as the top-four programs qualify for the conference tournament later this month.
Wagner senior co-captain RHP
Danny Marsh (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township) went six innings in picking up his sixth victory of the season (6-1), as he allowed three hits, one earned run while walking seven and striking out five in the 108-pitch outing. Marsh's six wins this season are one short of tying for sixth-place in a single-season, tying Joe Testa, Justin Lucas, Ziggy Wachsmuth and Don Finley.
Freshman
Nick Robino (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum School) earned his first career save, throwing a scoreless ninth inning, allowing just a hit.
Sophomore CF Joe
Silvestrone (Manalapan, NJ/Freehold Township) went 2-for-5 with four RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore 3B
Anthony Pecora (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) went 4-for-4, three singles and double. Junior RF
Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) went 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Junior LF
Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville) drove in an RBI in the victory.
Fairleigh Dickinson's Matt McCann, Ryan Brennan, Jorge Iza and Mike Veit each had two hits on the afternoon with Evan McDonald driving in two of the three runs. James Donlon was credited with the other RBI. On the mound, starter Corey Zeller lasted five innings in taking the loss, dropping to 2-6 on the year after allowing eight hits, five earned runs while striking out three and walking three in defeat.
The Seahawks struck in the top of the first. Junior SS
Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) was plunked by a pitch. With one out, sophomore catcher
Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) drew a six-pitch walk, giving the Seahawks runners on first and second. Zeller was able to get Godino on strikes before walking Cala, which loaded the bases for
Silvestrone.
After taking ball one,
Silvestrone stepped back into the box and connected on his third home run of the season, clearing the bases as the ball sailed high over the left center field wall, giving the Seahawks a 4-0 lead.
Wagner was threatening for more when Pecora doubled to left field and advanced to third on a balk. Freshman 1B
Nick D'Amore (Philadelphia, PA/Neumann-Goretti) walked, giving the visitors runners on the corners, but Zeller got junior 2B
Kyle Brey (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) to fly out to right, ending the inning.
The home team had a chance in the first, as with one out Bobby Romano walked and Brennan singled to left field. Marsh was able to escape the inning and didn't allow another base hit until the sixth inning.
The Seahawks added a run in the top of the fifth in taking a 5-0 lead as Cala connected on his fifth home run of the year, a solo shot to center. Cala's round-tripper was the tenth of the series for the Seahawks, who muscled out eight blast during Saturday's doubleheader.
The visitors scored their sixth run of the contest in the top of the sixth. After Dylan Forsythe struck out Brey, he issued three straight walks to Mazzio, freshman designated hitter/pitcher
Freddy Sabido (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner [Saint Louis Univ]) and Capra. Godino sent a deep fly to right field, which brought home Mazzio as Wagner increased the lead to 6-0.
Fairleigh Dickinson got on the board in the bottom half of the frame. Marsh set down the leadoff hitter, Donlon, on a grounder to short but allowed Iza to triple to left center, the first hit Marsh allowed since the first inning. McDonald singled through the right side which plated Iza.
To start the bottom of the seventh, Wagner went to the bullpen, bringing in right-handed reliever,
Douglas Molnar (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North). Three straight singles from McCann, Romano and Brennan loaded the bases for the Knights. Molnar issued a walk to Donlon, which brought in McCann, cutting the lead to 6-2. Molnar was able to strike out Iza for the first out of the frame. McDonald trimmed the lead in half, 6-3, when he sent a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Romano for the second run of the inning. Molnar got out of the inning when Jason Fatzinger lined out to center.
The Knights had something brewing in the bottom of the eighth. Veit led off with single but Brandon Seltzer grounded into the 6-4-3 double play. McCann sent a two-out single through the left side and Romano was hit by a pitch, giving the Knights runners on first and second, prompting the Seahawks to go to the bullpen.
Wagner head coach
Jim Carone elected to bring in the left-handed Sabido. The first batter he saw, Brennan, walked, loading the bases. FDU turned to its bench, electing to send up Hunter Reeser to face the 6-7 southpaw. Sabido got the count to his favor at 1-2 before Reeser ran the count full. On the seventh-pitch of the at-bat, Sabido got Reeser swinging at strike three, ending the threat.
The Seahawks had a chance to add to its lead in the ninth. With two outs,
Silvestrone doubled to left center. Pecora beat out an infield to short but
Silvestrone tried to score on the play but was thrown out at home by the Knights' first baseman.
In the bottom of the ninth, Iza led off with a double to right center. Followed by a walk to McDonald, coach Carone brought in Robino. On a 2-2 pitch, Robino got Fatzinger to roll into the 5-3 double play. Down to their last out, Veit singled through the right side, giving the Knights runners on the corner but couldn't get the tying runs in as Danny Demetrops, who pinch-hit for Seltzer, grounded back to Robino ending the ballgame.
The Green & White returns home to the Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George as the Seahawks will host the Central Connecticut Blue Devils in their final home series of the 2017 season. The four-game set is scheduled for May 12 through May 14.
