Teaneck, NJ - Trailing 10-3 heading into the final inning of game one, the Wagner baseball team erupted for five runs in the top of the ninth to trail by two but couldn't complete the comeback, dropping game one to Fairleigh Dickinson, 10-8, in a pivotal Northeast Conference (NEC) contest.

With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 14-23 and 6-9 in league games while the Knights improve to 12-24 and 8-8 in conference tilts.

Freshman designated hitter Freddy Sabido (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner [Saint Louis Univ]) went 4-for-5 in game one, scoring three runs while hitting two solo round-trippers.

Sophomore catcher Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) went 2-for-5 with four RBIs, coming on his ninth-inning grand slam. Junior LF Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville) and freshman 3B Nick D'Amore (Philadelphia, PA /Neumann-Goretti) also hit solo homers.

Senior RHP Austin Goeke (Bordentown, NJ/The Hun School) lasted 5.2 innings, allowing eight hits and a season-high ten runs in taking just his second loss of the year (5-2) despite striking out seven batters. Freshman reliever Steven Bowley (Medford, NJ / Holy Cross Academy) came on to throw 2.1 scoreless frames while allowing just one hit.

FDU scored the game's first runs in the bottom of the first as Evan McDonald connected on a two-run homer.

Three innings later, the Green & White evened the score at 2-2. Sabido launched the first of his two homers as he took the Knights' starter, Evan Layne, 1-0 pitch over the center field wall. After Capra had flown out to right, Godino took Layne's 2-2 pitch to the deepest part of left-center field as Wagner knotted the game at 2-2.

The Knights regained the lead on McDonald's second home run of the game, this one coming with one out in the bottom of the fourth.

After Wagner had was set down in their half of the fifth, FDU tacked on four runs in taking a 7-2 advantage. With one-out, back-to-back singles from Mike Veit and Brandon Seltzer gave the home team runners on first and second. A walk to Matt McCann loaded the bases for Bobby Romano. With the count full (3-2), Romano cleared the based with a home run to right field, giving FDU the five-run lead.

Sabido got the visitor to within four after launching a sixth-inning leadoff solo shot to right field. The Seahawks threatened as Capra doubled to left and Godino walked.

The Knights went to their bullpen, summoning for Logan Frati, who was able to get junior RF Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) on strikes and sophomore CF Joe Silvestrone (Manalapan, NJ/Freehold Township) to ground into an inning-ending, 4-6-3 double play.

In the bottom of the stanza, Seltzer put FDU back up by five, 8-3, on a RBI single to centerfield. The Seahawks went to the pen, bringing in Bowley, who walked McCann in giving the Knights runners on first and second with two outs. Bowley gave up a bases-clearing two-run single to Romano as FDU took a 10-3 lead heading into the seventh.

After a scoreless seventh and eighth, the Seahawks staged their comeback attempt. D'Amore launched a leadoff home run on a 2-1 pitch from Frati in trimming the lead to 10-4. Freshman Eric Lauk (Mullica Hill, NJ / Clearview Regional) pinch-hit for senior Brad Currao (Howell, NJ/St. Rose) and drew a five-pitch walk. Frati gave up another walk to junior SS Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE], giving Wagner runners on first and second with no one out.

The Knights went to the pen for the second time, bringing in Jake Sciarotta.  Sabido was the first batter to face Sciarotta, and the freshman DH sent a single to right, loading the bases for Capra.

On a 1-1 pitch, Capra with a massive swing, unloaded the bases as he connected for the Seahawks fifth home run of the contest, as the visitors trailed 10-8.

FDU elected to bring in Brennan from first base, who struck out Godino, Cala and Silvestrone in ending the game and securing the two-run victory.
