Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College softball team put forth a complete effort on offense and defense, sweeping the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights in Northeast Conference (NEC) play on Saturday afternoon, winning game one by a score of 5-2 before earning a dominant 10-2 victory in game two.
"These are two very very big wins for us in the conference," said head coach
Angie Churchill. "I am very excited and proud about how the team played today. I think our pitching was great, we made some really good adjustments at the plate and we had a number of double plays, so our defense was very good today."
With the two wins, the Seahawks improve to 3-1 in NEC and 10-17 on the season, while the Knights fall to 0-4 in conference play and 2-19 on the year.
Game 1 Recap – Wagner 5, Fairleigh Dickinson 2
The visiting Knights got off to a fast start, as Reanna Cervantes homered during the game's first at bat. Wagner answered quickly, as freshman Amelia van Orman (Orange, CA / Lutheran High School of Orange County) doubled to left in the second to score freshman
Kaila Smith (Millville, NJ / Millville) in tying the game at one apiece.
In the third, the Seahawks took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single by junior
Stefanie Aplin (Nesconset, NY / Smithtown East / Georgian Court University), scoring sophomore
Karen Prihoda (Hamilton Square, NJ / The Lawrenceville School).
The Green and White added three more insurance runs in the fourth. After Smith walked, freshman
Alyssa Tucker (Laguna Niguel, CA / Santa Margarita Catholic) singled and Prihoda reached on an error to load the bases for freshman
Zoe Bender (Glen Rock, NJ / Glen Rock), who singled to center field, while great baserunning allowed all three runners to come across.
The Knights added one run in the fifth and loaded the bases in the seventh to allow the winning run to come to the plate, but junior
Morgan Brown (Buckeye, AZ / Verrado) got Cheryl Lopez to fly out to end the game and earn the complete game victory, moving her to 6-4 on the season.
Brown recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts in the contest, six of which came in the opening three frames.
Prihoda led Wagner with two runs scored, while Bender's two hits and three RBI in game one were tops on the team. As a team, Wagner combined for eight hits in game one.
Game 2 Recap – Wagner 10, FDU 2
Fairleigh Dickinson once again scored in the first inning on an RBI double by Kellie Natham, but the Seahawks answered with a big bottom half of the first, scoring seven runs on eight hits in the opening frame alone.
An RBI groundout by Aplin got Wagner on the board, as Prihoda came around to score, followed by a
Brianna Tredway (Downingtown, PA / Downingtown West) RBI single to score Bender. Next up, Smith connected on her team-leading sixth home run of the year, knocking the ball over the left center wall.
Four batters later, sophomore
Lauren Serrato (Litchfield Park, AZ / Verrado High School) singled to score Tucker and Van Orman. Her second time at the plate in the inning, Prihoda hit a triple to the deepest part of right center field to score Serrato and give the Seahawks a comfortable 7-1 advantage.
The Green and White added one run in the third on a Van Orman RBI double, while a Tredway base hit in the third scored both Bender and Prihoda.
The Seahawks recorded 14 hits in game two, with Tredway and Prihoda contributing three hits each.
In the circle, senior
McKaleigh Goodale (Bradenton, FL / Lakewood Ranch) earned her second victory of the season, striking out one in five innings of work while giving up two runs.
Wagner returns tomorrow with another crucial NEC doubleheader against the Bryant Bulldogs, starting at 12 pm.
