Staten Island, NY - For the third time in the last four matches and sixth time this season, the Wagner College men's tennis team earned a shutout victory, defeating Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) members, the University of Delaware Blue Hens, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 11-7 on the season while the Blue Hens fall to 8-13.
"We beat a tough Delaware squad today by playing as a team from top to bottom," stated second-year head coach
Jason Sinkoff. "Delaware has had similar scores like us against common opponents, and we knew it would be a tough battle all day," commented Sinkoff. "The guy's energy was high today, and we look to continue that momentum against Fairleigh Dickinson tomorrow."
The Green & White took the first point of the match after securing victories at No. 2 & No. 3 doubles.
Sophomore
Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot) and freshman
Dylan Walters (Johannesburg, South Africa / St Stithians Boys' College) improved to 6-2 overall this season after blanking Laurenz Lankes/Blaise Casselbury, 6-0, at No. 2.
Junior
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) and sophomore Ilya Kneepelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands / Scala College Secondary School) notched their 28th career doubles win after defeating Dominick Perez and Roy Cheng, 6-3, at No. 3 doubles.
Sophomore
Anatoliy Lashkul (Kiev, Ukraine/High School #78) edged Lankes in No. 1 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Walters defeated Tyler Flematti, 6-0; 6-2, at No. 4 while Poland claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5.
The Seahawks will host Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday in a crucial Northeast Conference (NEC) match, starting at 2:00 p.m. at the Wagner Tennis Courts.
