New Rochelle, NY – The Wagner women's water polo team finished the 2017 regular season with a perfect 14-0 record after defeating Villanova University, 18-9. This marks the second straight year that the Seahawks have accumulated an undefeated record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Sophomore attack
Erica Hardy (Montreal, Quebec / St. Thomas) fired a team-high six goals, while junior utility
Kimberly Watson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec / John Rennie) and freshman center
Millie Pullyblank (Victoria, Australia / Haileybury Girls College) each registered hat tricks.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper
Emily Riddle collected ten blocks, while freshman attack
Franciska Milo-Sidlo (Budapest, Hungary / Pasareti Gimnazium) recorded five steals.
The Green & White allowed Villanova to score just three times in the first half. Meanwhile, the Seahawks tallied ten markers, ignited by Watson less than one minute into the opening stanza. Watson's hat trick in the first quarter marks the 18
th one of her junior campaign as she sits atop the MAAC leaderboard with 92 goals on the seasons.
The Wildcats reached the back of the net first coming out of intermission as they scored three goals to Wagner's two. However, the Seahawks ended the third quarter with a late 3-0 run to extend their lead 15-6.
The final stanza was an even matchup with each team netting two strikes apiece. Hardy and Milo-Sidlo took advantage of a power play opportunity, teaming up to score the Green & White's final point. In addition to recording a team-high five steals, the rookie also dished out a six assists on the day.
The MAAC Regular Season Champions return Saturday, April 29 for the first semifinal game of the MAAC Championship. Hosted by Marist College, the Seahawks will face the No. 4 seed at 12:00 pm. The remainder of the seeds will be determined after the conclusion of today's league contests.
