Brooklyn, NY – The Wagner women's water polo team claimed its second straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular season title after defeating St. Francis Brooklyn by a count of 10-4. The Seahawks will be rewarded with the No. 1 seed at the upcoming MAAC Championship April 29-30.
With the win, the Green & White is now one win away from a perfect 14-0 conference season, as the Seahawks extend their mark to 22-10 overall, 13-0 in MAAC play. Meanwhile, the Terriers fall to 3-21 overall and 2-11 in the league.
Wagner outscored the Terriers 4-1 in the first half behind four strikes from freshman center
Millie Pullyblank (Victoria, Australia / Haileybury Girls College). The rookie registered her third hat trick of the week less than four minutes into the contest, making it the eighth of her career.
St. Francis reached the back of the net first coming out of intermission, but junior attack
Elise Begg (Newbury Park, CA / Newbury Park) countered with back-to-back tallies on power play opportunities. Reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week
Jacqui Sjogren (Queensland, Australia / St. Andrews Anglican College) then sandwiched two markers around a successful five-meter penalty shot by the Terriers in gaining an 8-3 advantage.
The Green & White extended its lead in the final stanza with strikes from Sjogren and junior attack
Lacey Anderson (Thousand Oaks, CA / Westlake). In addition to her late goal, Anderson collected a team-high four steals on the day.
The 2017 Regular Season Champions face Villanova in their final MAAC matchup on Saturday, April 15 at 12:00 pm. The Seahawks will then be joined by Marist, Virginia Military Institute, and Iona at the 2017 MAAC Championship on the campus of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY, April 29-30.
