Old Westbury, NY – The Wagner College baseball team completed the doubleheader sweep of the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) Bears, posting a 4-0 victory in game two of Saturday's twin bill. The Seahawks improve to 5-13 on the year while NYIT falls to 2-19-1.

Senior RHP Austin Goeke (Bordentown, NJ/The Hun School) set a new career-high with ten strikeouts in earning the complete game victory. In his seven innings of work, Goeke becomes the first Seahawk since Nolan Long ('15) to record double-digit strikeouts as Long, who is currently in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, struck out 13 batters against Central Connecticut back on April 24, 2015.  Goeke gave up five hits and walked two in picking up his first victory of the season. Junior SS Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) and sophomore DH Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) each had two hits in the contest with an RBI, while junior RF Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) connected on his third home run of the year. Sophomore CF Joe Silvestrone (Manalapan, NJ/Freehold Township) drove in the fourth run for the Green & White in the contest.

The Seahawks struck first as Cala led off the game with a towering home run that sailed over the left field wall. Goeke was dominate on the hill, limiting the Bears to just three hits over the first four frames. The Green & White erupted for three more runs in their half of the fifth in taking a four-run advantage. Cala reached on throwing error and moved the second on a wild pitch. Mazzio tripled to left center which plated home Cala for the second run of the game. Capra followed with a single up the middle that brought Mazzio in to score.  The final tally came when Silvestrone laced a double to left field, scoring Capra from second base.

NYIT's best chance came in the bottom of the sixth as Anthony Martelli sent a one-out single to shortstop. The next batter, Louis Mele, walked, giving the Bears runners on first and second. Goeke was able to settle in and get Anthony Caradonna to foul out to left and ended the frame with a punch-out of Brendan Dowd. Goeke closed out the contest with a pair of strikeouts and recorded the final out on a fly ball to right in earning his ninth career victory.

The Seahawks are scheduled to play Big East members, Seton Hall, on April 5.
