New Haven, CT - The Wagner men's tennis team recorded its fourth shutout of the season, blanking the Sacred Heart University Pioneers, 7-0, in a Northeast Conference (NEC) match on Sunday evening.
With the win, the Seahawks have now won back-to-back games and improve to 8-5 and 2-0 in league play while the Pioneers fall to 2-4 and 0-1 in league matches.
"We have spent a lot of time over the past couple of weeks focusing on closing out matches and staying aggressive," commented head coach
Jason Sinkoff. "We won all our three-setters and tie-breakers. Our guys showed a lot of heart today."
Wagner and Sacred Heart have had tightly contested meetings recently, as SHU defeated the Green & White, 5-2, during the regular season last year but Wagner eliminated the Pioneers from the 2016 NEC Championship, 4-3.Â
"It's been back-and-forth over the last couple of meetings between our programs," said Sinkoff. "It's been a steady improvement from our guys and today; they played great. We will need to continue that momentum as we gear up for our spring break trip down to Washington, D.C."
The Seahawks swept through doubles play earning the first point of the match.Â
The pairing of sophomore
Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot) and freshman
Dylan Walters (Johannesburg, South Africa / St Stithians Boys' College) improved to 3-0 on the year, earning a 6-1 victory over Bryan Einstoss/Chris Sause.Â
Junior
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) and sophomore
Ilya Kneppelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands / Scala College Secondary School) moved to 13-3 overall this season in doubles play and 10-1 in dual matches after edging out Seiji Hosokowa/Francisco Diaz, 7-6 (7-1). Â Sophomores
Anatoliy Lashkul (Kiev, Ukraine/High School #78) and
Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa / Kersney College Secondary School) also picked up their 13th doubles win of the season at No. 1 play. The Seahawks swept all singles matches to complete the shutout.Â
Wagner will spend their Spring Break around our Nation's Capitol as they will first travel to Coppin State on March 14, then head to NEC-rival, Mount St. Mary's on March 15 and conclude the three-game stint at Georgetown on March 16.Â
