Latham, NY - The Wagner men's tennis team opened its spring season by extending its overall win streak to six straight after defeating the Siena College Saints, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at TriCity Fitness.
"This afternoon featured a lot of close, contested matches," commented head coach
Jason Sinkoff. "Dale (Sandy) and Toly (Anatoliy) did a great job in leading the guys today as they played with high energy in the doubles match and continued with strong singles play. As a team, we are going to work even harder in practice and get ready for the challenge of Villanova next Saturday."
The Seahawks took two of three in doubles play as sophomores
Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa/Kersney College Secondary School) and
Anatoliy Lashkul (Kiev, Ukraine/High School #78) picked up a 6-3 victory in Flight No. 1 over Siena's Cameron Kirkwood and Alessandro Saglia.
The duo of junior
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) and sophomore
Ilya Kneppelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands/Scala College Secondary School) was triumphant over Matt Bellino and Jace Koretz, 6-4, in No. 2 play.
Newcomer
Dylan Walters (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. Stithians Boys' College) and first-year Seahawk
Hans Ohrner (Margate, FL/Coral Springs Christian Academy) was edged out in No. 3 doubles, 7-6 (7-4).
In singles play, freshman
Siddharth Anand (New Delhi, India/Modern School Barakhamba Road) defeated Koretz, 6-2; 6-1 as he earned his seventh win. Sandy was victorious at No. 2 action, besting Saglia, 6-3; 6-0 as Sandy improves to 9-4 on the season and 3-1 out of No. 2 action.
Lashkul defeated Kirkwood, 7-5; 6-3 as he picked up his ninth win of the year. Walters picked up his first collegiate victory, coming away with a 6-4; 2-6; 6-3 win.
The Seahawks will look for its seventh win of the season as they will take on the Villanova University Wildcats on February 11.
