Lewisburg, PA – The No. 19-ranked Wagner women's water polo team rallied in the third quarter and erased a two-goal deficit, but was eventually upset 5-4 by No. 21 Harvard University in the opening game of the Bison Invitational.
The Crimson took an early 1-0 lead in the first quarter before reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Week
Franciska Miló-Sidló (Budapest, Hungary / Pasaréti Gimnázium) dished her first assist of contest to fellow freshman attack Jacque Sjogren (Queensland, Australia / St. Andrews Anglican College). Sjogren was able to take advantage of a man-up opportunity to even the bout 1-1 midway through the first stanza. However, the Crimson scored once more before the clock ran out to enter the second quarter leading 2-1.
After Harvard doubled its lead in the second period, the Green & White launched a comeback and evened the contest 3-3 in the third quarter behind markers from junior attack
Lacey Anderson (Thousand Oaks, CA / Westlake) and junior utility
Kimberly Watson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec / John Rennie). In addition to her lone goal of the day, Anderson registered a team-high eight steals.
The Crimson opened up the final eight minutes with back-to-back tallies to regain a 5-3 lead over the Seahawks. However, freshman duo Miló-Sidló and Sjogren teamed up to rattle the cage one last time on another power play with less than a minute remaining in the game.
The Green & White are now 1-1 on the season against Harvard. The two programs will meet one final time in Boston, MA at the Harvard Invitational on March 5.
Wagner returns to the pool this evening for a match-up with Gannon University at 9:15. The Seahawks defeated the Division III Golden Knights 19-6 in last year's Bison Invitational on February 28.
