Staten Island, NY – Wagner men's track and field head coach Joe Stasi has announced that Trausti Thor Thorstein has joined the program for the upcoming 2017-18 season. Thorstein, who hails from Iceland, attended the Universal School where he competed as a member of both the track & field and soccer programs.
"We are very excited about Trausti joining the track and field program," commented coach Stasi. "He has had a lot of success in limited opportunities to compete. No question he will develop into a very strong runner. I expect him to make an immediate impact on the conference."
Thorstein holds the Iceland national record for the U-17 in the 1500m and 1000m for the U-19. Additionally, his multiple accolades in the U-18 800m held up for nearly nine years before being broken.
"Trausti, is what I would call, the complete package," commented assistant coach Ryan Budd. "He's smart, passionate, personable and talented. He will be a great addition to our program and college. We expect great things from him."
A two-time representative in the U-20 Nordic Championships and has participated at the 2017 Reykjavik International Games, Thorstein has captured an indoor and outdoor title in both the 800m (1:55.11) and 1500m (4:00.06). Thorstein competed at the 2017 World Youth Games where he placed ninth in the 800m with a time of 1:57.58. On June 7, 2017, at the Oslo Boysen Memorial, Thorstein posted a finals time in the 800m at 1:55.11.
Wagner opens their indoor track and field season on December 1st, as they travel to West Long Branch, NJ, to compete in the Monmouth University Season Opener.
