14th Annual NJIT Highlander XC Challenge Results
Newark, NJ - The Wagner men's cross country team took part in the 14th Annual NJIT Highlander XC Challenge at Branch Brook Park on Saturday morning.
The Green & White finished 2-1 on the day, defeating fellow Northeast Conference (NEC) member, Fairleigh Dickinson, 19-36, and besting Saint Peter's, 15-40, but falling to NJIT, 24-33, in the team scoring portion of the race.
Individually, the Seahawks placed four harriers among the top ten, led by senior
Joseph Abbatiello (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford), who placed second out of the 25 Division I runners in the event, crossing the finish line with a time of 26:14.47. Junior
Matthew Whalen (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East) took home fourth-place honors with a time of 26:48.32.
Sophomore
Nick Velez (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) and classmate
Alvin Sime (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) rounded out the top-ten finishes, as Velez crossed the finish line in 27:41.23, to place seventh, while Sime recorded a finals time of 28:23.95, good for 10th.
Junior
Jack Schnorbus (Haymarket, VA/Battlefield) gave the Seahawks five members inside the top-20 in the Saturday 8K event, finishing with a time of 29:54.19.
The men's cross country team will be back in action on October 20 when the Seahawks travel to New Britain, CT for the second time this season to take part in the CCSU Mini Meet, hosted by the Blue Devils at Stanley Quarter Park, which is also the site of the 2017 NEC Championships.
