New Britain, CT - The Wagner College men's cross country team concluded its season with a sixth-place showing at the 2017 Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship, held at Stanley Quarter Park and hosted by Central Connecticut.

The Blue Devils claimed their ninth consecutive team title posting a low score of 34 with five of their runners placing in the top-13. Bryce England of Saint Francis U was crowned NEC Outstanding Performer after crossing the finish line with a winning time of 26:47.1.

Sacred Heart (53), Saint Francis U (59) rounded out the top three schools. Mount St. Mary's, Bryant, the Seahawks, Fairleigh Dickinson and St. Francis Brooklyn closed out the eight-team, 8K meet.

For Wagner, senior
Joseph Abbatiello (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) concluded his final collegiate race for the cross country program in placing ninth with a time of 26:36.6. Abbatiello shaved off nearly four minutes off his time from last season's championship race in finishing among the top-10 harriers. In addition, Abbatiello was named to the All-Conference Performer team.

Sophomore
Jonathan Besselink (Kingston, Ontario/Holy Cross Catholic Secondary) finished his second career conference meet among the top-25 racers, crossing the finish line in 23rd place with time of 27:19.5, trimming nearly three minutes off his time at last season's championship.
Other notable performances from this morning's run included sophomore
Nick Velez (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph By The Sea), who clocked in with a time of 27.57.3 and junior
Matthew Whalen (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East), who placed among the top-40 with a time of 28:07.1
The Seahawks will now turn their attention to their indoor track & field responsibilities, which the season schedule will be announced at a later date.
