Postgame Press Conference: Head Coach Bashir Mason and Senior Guard Michael Carey
Staten Island, NY – In a rematch of the 2016 Northeast Conference (NEC) championship game, Fairleigh Dickinson held on for a 70-69 victory over Wagner, despite 21 points and a career-high 22 rebounds, from Seahawk senior guard
Michael Carey (Nassau, Bahamas / Lamar Consolidated [San Jacinto College]) tonight at the Spiro Sports Center in a game that was televised nationally on
CBS Sports Network.
With the win, FDU improves to 5-9 on the season, 3-0 in the NEC, while the Green & White fall to 5-8 on the season, 2-2 in league play.
Trailing by eight at 68-60 with 2:43 left in the game, Wagner scored seven straight points to make it a 68-67 game on a jumper by junior guard
Corey Henson (Upper Marlboro, MD / DeMatha Catholic) with 46 seconds remaining. After FDU center Mike Holloway answered with a bucket in the lane to make it a 70-67 game, Carey sank a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left to again make it a one-point game at 70-69.
After Carey was forced to foul Earl Potts, Jr. in the backcourt at the 13-second mark, Potts missed the front end of a one-and-one which allowed the Seahawks to advance to the ball to midcourt before calling time out with nine seconds remaining.
After an FDU timeout, Wagner worked the ball around to Carey who was short on a left wing three-point try. Seahawk freshman guard
Blake Francis (Herndon, VA / Westfield) grabbed the rebound inside the foul line but his off-balance, potential game winner also bounded off the front of the rim as the Knights held on for the win.
In addition to his 21 points and 22 rebounds, the 6'5" Carey's ultra-productive evening included two assists, one steal and a perfect 7-of-7 effort from the free throw line. Henson wound up with 14 points, along with three assists, while freshman guard
Connor Ferrell (Conyers, GA / Rockdale County [DME Sports Academy]) was the third Seahawk in double figures, finishing with 12 points.
Stephan Jiggets led a balanced FDU offensive showing with 17 points. All told, the Knights had four players hit for double digits, as Holloway finished with 16 points while Nheme Ghassan and Darian Anderson added 12 and 10, respectively.
Wagner shot 51.6 percent from the floor in building a 39-36 halftime lead. In the second half, however, the Seahawks shot just 28 percent. Overall, FDU held a slim 42.3 percent to 41.1 percent edge in shooting, while Wagner held a commanding 43-21 advantage in rebounding as Carey, by himself, grabbed more rebounds than the entire FDU team.
The Knights hurt the Seahawks, however, from deep as FDU hit 10-of-23 three-pointers (43.5 percent) while Wagner was just 6-of-20 (30 percent) from beyond the arc.
As for specialty stats, the teams tied with 22 points in the paint apiece. The Seahawks held a significant 21-4 edge in second-chance points and an 18-8 advantage in bench scoring, while FDU led in points off turnovers (16-9) and fast-break points (18-8).
This back-and-forth affair between the Seahawks and Knights featured 11 lead changed and three ties.
The Seahawks close out its mini two game homestand as they welcome the Sacred Heart University Pioneers to Staten Island on Saturday, January 7th with a 4:00 p.m. tipoff.
