Tempe, AZ – The Wagner women's water polo team,
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) preseason favorite, suffered a 13-3 loss against the No. 5-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils in the finale of the ASU Invitational on Sunday.
Arizona got on the board early and often, opening the contest with three unanswered goals. Junior utility
Kimberly Watson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec / John Rennie) ended the Sun Devil's early run, burying her eighth goal of the weekend with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Arizona tallied one more to end the first quarter ahead 4-1.
Wagner's single-season record holder in sprints won, Watson was victorious in winning the second quarter sprint over ASU's Claudia Abad. However, the Seahawks registered just one marker from junior attack
Lacey Anderson (Thousand Oaks, CA / Westlake) to the Devil's three to trail 7-2 at the half.
The Green & White were held scoreless in the third quarter, as Arizona extended its lead to 12-2. Sophomore attack
Erica Hardy (Montreal, Quebec / St. Thomas) netted her fourth goal of the tournament with just under three minutes on the clock for the Seahawks' final goal of the contest.
Wagner returns to Grymes Hill 0-3 after hard fought losses to three nationally ranked teams. The three-time defending MAAC champions travel to Providence, RI to compete in the Brown-Bruno Classic February 3-5.
