6th Annual Villanova Invitational - Round Two Results
Villanova, PA - The Wagner men's tennis team kicked off their fall season at the 6th Annual Villanova Invitational, located on the Villanova University West Campus.
The tournament style is different than most. The Villanova Invitational is a "two-and-one" format, which includes one doubles match and two, singles matches, per matchup. The team that wins at least two of the three games advances in the main draw of the tournament. Â The losing team, on-the-other-hand, moves on to the back draw. Â There will be two draws of sixteen and one five-team round robin.
The teams competing in the event are the host Wildcats, LaSalle, Saint Joseph's, the Seahawks, Delaware, Chestnut Hill, Lafayette, and Rider.
"It was great to see the newcomers and our returners compete in real matches for the first time this season," said second-year head coach Jason Sinkoff. "Everyone worked hard and competed very well today."  Â
In Round One of the Champions Draw, the Green & White pairing of freshman Hans Oher (Margate, FL/Coral Springs Christian Academy) and 2016 All-NEC Second Teamer, junior
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) were bested by Saint Joseph's, 2-1. The Seahawks dropped the doubles point, 6-4. In singles play, Ohmer picked up his first collegiate win, defeating the Hawks' Pete Dewitt, 6-1; 6-2.
The Seahawks earned its first true win of the Invitational, as the pairing of All-NEC selection, sophomore
Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa/Kersney College Secondary School) teamed with newcomer
Anatoliy Lashkul (Kiev, Ukraine/High School #78). The duo posted a 2-1 triumph over the Saint Joseph's pairing of Andre Fick and Tim Stierle. Sandy and Lashkul were victorious in doubles, 6-3 and Sandy earned a 6-4; 6-2 win over Fick to secure the match. Â
The Green & White's sophomore combo of
Ilya Kneppelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands/Scala College Secondary School) and
Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot) drew the University of Delaware's Tyler Flematti and Laurenz Lankes. Â Poland was able to oust Lankes, 6-3; 3-6; 10-6 but the Hens took the match after securing a 7-6 (4) win at doubles and Flematti earning a 6-4; 6-4 victory over Kneppelhout. Â
