Princeton, NJ – The first-year Wagner men's water polo team battled No. 10 Princeton on near-even terms before dropping a hard-fought 14-10 decision at DeNunzio Pool in game one of the Princeton Invite tonight.
While still in search of their first win, the 0-4 Seahawks stood tall tonight on the road against the Tigers. Junior utility
Ciaran Wolohan (Manly, Australia/St. Aloysius College/Golden West College), Wagner's leading scorer on the young season, and freshman driver
Oscar Nomura (Irvine, CA/Irvine), led the way offensively with three goals apiece.
The Tigers came out of the gates strong in this one, scoring the first five goals of the game to lead by a count of 5-0 at the end of the first quarter. However, Wolohan's goal two minutes into the second quarter began a 4-3 Seahawk run.The Seahawks also received second-quarter goals from sophomore utility
Devin O'Donnell (Pointe-Claire, Quebec/Selwyn/San Diego Mesa College), freshman 2M guard
Danny Rafael (Cooper City, FL/Cooper City), and a second score from Wolohan, in cutting the deficit to 8-4 at the intermission.
Wagner continued to challenge Princeton in the third quarter, again outscoring the Tigers 4-3, behind two goals from Nomura
, as the Seahawks trailed by just an 11-8 margin entering the final stanza.
Wolohan and Nomura each found the back of the net once more to end the game with three goals apiece, however, the late offensive surge by the Green & White was not enough to overcome their Ivy League opponent.
Wagner returns to for two games tomorrow to close out the 2016 Princeton Invite. The Seahawks will face their first west coast opponent in California Baptist University at 2:15 p.m., before concluding the Princeton Invite with a matchup against Connecticut College at 8:30 pm.
