Providence, RI – The first-year Wagner men's water polo team held its own against top competition at Brown University's three-game
2016 Bruno Classic , falling by a count of 15-8 this afternoon vs. No. 14 Harvard.
For the third straight game, the Seahawks' offense was led by junior
Ciaran Wolohan (Manly, Australia/St. Aloysius College/Golden West College) and sophomore
Devin O'Donnell (Pointe-Claire, Quebec/Selwyn) who combined for six of Wagner's eight goals.
Wolohan scored the Seahawks' lone goal in the first quarter as Harvard opened an early 5-1 lead heading into quarter number two. After the Crimson extended its lead to 8-2, O'Donnell deposited a goal with 14 seconds left in the half on a man-up opportunity to make it an 8-3 game at the intermission.
Wagner competed on near-even terms in the third quarter, receiving goals from O'Donnell, Wolohan, and
James Grady (Boca Raton, FL/Boca Raton). Grady's goal at 4:17, which marked the junior transfer's first collegiate goal as the Seahawks trailed by a 12-6 count entering the final stanza.
Freshman
Matthew Miller (San Ramon, CA/California High) tallied the Green & White's final goal midway through the fourth quarter, notching his second score in the young season with his first career goal coming the fourth quarter of yesterday's contest with No. 13 Brown.
The Seahawks (0-3) opened the Bruno Classic with hard-fought defeats to No. 13 Brown (14-5) and MIT (14-13)
Wagner returns to action on Thursday, September 8 at 6:30 pm when the Seahawks face Princeton University in the Princeton Invite before meeting California Baptist University and Connecticut College on September 9, with those contests set to begin at 2:15 pm and 8:30 pm, respectively.
