Providence, RI – The Wagner men's water polo team dropped a hard-fought 14-13 contest to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Engineers to close out the first day of the
2016 Bruno Classic.
Devin O'Donnell (Pointe-Claire, Quebec/Selwyn/John Abbott College) and
Ciaran Wolohan (Manly, Australia/St. Aloysius College/Golden West College) combined for a total of nine goals to lead the way offensively.
O'Donnell recorded his second four-goal game after scoring four times earlier in the day during Wagner's 14-5 loss to No. 13 Brown. The Canadian netted back-to-back goals in the first quarter to tie the Engineers before freshman
Danny Rafael (Cooper City, FL/Cooper City) notched his first collegiate goal to give the Green & White a 3-2 lead.
Rafael scored twice more, once in the second quarter and once in the fourth, to bring his career total to three goals.
Wagner fell behind 7-4 in the second quarter before Wolohan and O'Donnell each scored in the final minute of the opening half to close the deficit to 7-6 at the intermission.
Despite back-and-forth scoring, Wagner trailed MIT for the remainder of the game. Freshman
Aaron Leighton (Lake Forest, CA/El Toro) also netted his first collegiate goal midway through the third quarter as the Seahawks finished the quarter down by two.
Once again, the Green & White held strong in the fourth quarter and outscored MIT 3-2. However, Rafael and Wolohan's three late goals were not enough to overcome the Engineers' early offense as the Seahawks dropped their second match, 14-13.
Wagner returns to the pool at 1:40 p.m. on Sunday when the Green & White face No. 14 Harvard. For in-game updates, follow
