Men's Water Polo

Seahawks Edge No. 18 St. Francis Brooklyn 12-11 To Earn First-Ever Win Over Nationally-Ranked Foe

Scoresheet

Lewisburg, PA –
In its ninth game of existence, the Wagner men's water polo team conquered its first ever nationally-ranked opponent, defeating No. 18 St. Francis Brooklyn, 12-11 on Sunday in Day 2 of the Bison Invitational on the campus of Bucknell University.

The Seahawks were led offensively for the second straight game by freshman driver Matthew Miller (San Ramon, CA/California High) and junior utility Ciaran Wolohan (Manly, Australia/St. Aloysius College/Golden West College), who combined for a total of seven goals.

The Green & White trailed the Terriers 5-4 after the first quarter with two goals apiece by Miller and Wolohan. However, the Seahawks outscored their counterparts from Brooklyn, 5-2, during the second quarter as they controlled the lead for the remainder of the game.

Freshman utility Mike Ward (Grayslake, IL/Mundelein) and junior driver James Grady (Boca Raton, FL/Boca Raton) ripped three consecutive goals midway through the second quarter to put the Green & White ahead for the first time. Freshman driver Ethan Odger (Roxboro, Quebec/Pierrefonds Comprehensive) and Wolohan netted two more goals before the buzzer to put the Seahawks ahead 9-7 entering intermission.

Despite being outscored by the Terriers in a back-and-forth second half, the Seahawks were able to hold off their crosstown rival in the final seconds of the fourth quarter. St. Francis Brooklyn sophomore Bogdan Kostic scored with five minutes left in the final quarter to tie up the contest at 11.

In an exciting ending, Wolohan scored the game-winning goal with one second left on the clock to give the Seahawks their second win of the season and first win over a nationally-ranked opponent.

Wagner (2-7) returns to the pool to face University of Toronto at 3:30 pm in its final game of Bucknell University's Bison Invitational.
