NEC Release
Somerset, NJ – Seven Wagner track & field athletes garnered 2016 All-Northeast Conference (NEC) honors as announced by the league office today.
Women's Track & Field
Three members of the Seahawk women's track & field teams earned Second-Team Al-NEC honors while another two claimed spots on the All-Rookie Team.
Wagner's Second-Team All-League honorees were junior
Nicole Bell (Branchville, NJ / Sussex County Technical) in the 5,000m, senior
Danielle Iacampo (Staten Island, NY / St. John Villa) in the steeplechase and junior shot-putter
Zhane Stones (Philadelphia, PA / School of the Future). Earning NEC All-Rookie accolades were freshmen
Shavel Brown (Boynton Beach, FL / Boynton Beach) in the 200m and
Kenya Hyman (Ajax, Ontario / Pickering) in the 400m.
At the 2016 All-NEC Championships, Bell placed second in the 5,000m, crossing the finish line with a time of 18:05.53 in earning eight team points for the Seahawks. Iacampo placed second overall in the 3,000m steeple chase with a mark of 11:10.4 while Stones was second in the shot put with a throw of 13.45m.
Brown ran a 25.54 in the 200m Prelims which was 12th overall while Hyman picked up two points for the Seahawks after finishing seventh in the 400m Finals with a time of 57.46.
Team-wise, the Seahawks placed eighth overall with 52.5 points while Sacred Heart claimed the title with 183 points, followed by LIU Brooklyn (158) and Fairleigh Dickinson (85).
"I salute Danielle for capping her career on a high note and look forward to Nicole, Zhane, Shavel and Kenya returning to help bolster our 2017 team," said Wagner veteran head coach
Joe Stasi.
Men's Track & Field
Senior pole vaulter
Skylar Johnson (Point Pleasant, NJ / Point Pleasant Borough) delivered a second-place finish at the 2016 NEC Championships by clearing 4.70m en route to All-NEC Second Team honors while freshman
Lutfi Pocesta (Staten Island, NY / Susan E. Wagner) earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team by virtue of a 49.15m effort in the hammer throw, which was good for a fourth-place finish that garnered five points for the Seahawks.
In the final team standings, the Seahawk men placed seventh with 38 points. Central Connecticut claimed the team title with 208 points, followed by LIU Brooklyn (154) and Saint Francis U (132.5).
"I'm really proud of Skylar for earning Second-Team All-NEC honors, as well as Lufti on his All-Rookie selection and look forward to his development over the next three years," said Stasi.
