Poughkeepsie, NY - The Wagner baseball team dropped the first game of Saturday's non-conference doubleheader at Marist, 10-5.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 13-29 while the Red Foxes improves to 20-21.
Junior SS
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) paced the Wagner hitters going 4-for-4 on the afternoon with two runs scored and a walk. Freshman 1B
Anthony Harrold (Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Senior CF
Trey Nicosia (State College, PA/State College Area) and sophomores
Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) and
Kyle Brey (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) each drove in an RBI in the series opener. Junior RHP
Austin Goeke (Bordentown, NJ/The Hun School) falls to 4-4 on the season after lasting 4.0 innings, giving up seven hits; six earned runs while walking three and striking out three batters.
Seven of the nine Marist batters recorded two hits in the contest with Matt Iantosca driving in a team-high three RBIs and scoring a run. Scott Boches earned the win (1-1) after tossing 6.0 innings while giving up four runs (two earned) on ten hits while walking one and striking out six batters.
Wagner took an early 1-0 lead thanks to a two-out wild pitch which allowed Mascelli to score from third. The Seahawks added a run in the top of the second as senior RF
Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ/West-Windsor Plainsboro South) reached on an error by Marist's second baseman, as Harrold crossed the plate. The Red Foxes cut the deficit in half, 2-1, as John Brucker singled up the middle which scored Matt Iantosca from second.
With two-outs, Harrold singled through the right side which gave the Seahawks runners on first and second. Brey laced a single through the right side which scored sophomore 3B
Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) from second giving Wagner a 3-1 lead. Marist knotted the game at 3-3 thanks to a pair of RBI singles from Joey Aiola and Iantosca. After a scoreless fourth inning, the Red Foxes opened the game up in the bottom of the fifth.
The home team scored four times on four hits as they took a 7-3 lead. A sacrifice-fly from Iantosca broke the tie while Zachary Racusin brought in two with an RBI double to left center that was quickly followed up by an RBI single from Brucker. The Seahawks trimmed the lead to 7-4 as Nicosia sent a single up the middle that scored Mascelli, who led off the frame with a single and advanced to third on a fielding error by the right fielder. Marist added two more runs in the bottom of the stanza, taking a 9-4 advantage, thanks to back-to-back RBI singles from Tyler Kirkpatrick and Frank Gregoire.
Wagner scored its fifth run of the contest in the top of the eighth thanks to an RBI, sacrifice fly off the bat of Cala, which brought in Brey from third. Marist ended the game with a run in the bottom half of the frame as Iantosca scored Kirkpatrick on a RBI sacrifice bunt.
