Wagner Softball Splits Doubleheader With Drexel Tuesday Afternoon

Philadelphia, PA – The Wagner College softball team dropped a 7-4 decision to Drexel University before defeating the Dragons 3-1 in the nightcap to split Tuesday afternoon's gloomy doubleheader.
 
With the split the Seahawks and the Dragons each up picked up their 20th wins of the season.

Drexel cracked the scoreboard first in game one, putting up two runs in the first inning.
 
Wagner's junior left fielder Hana Gilbert (Valley Center, CA/Valley Center) then crushed a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning to tie up 2-2. Gilbert plated freshman right fielder Lauren Serrato (Litchfield, AZ/Verrado), who was walked to begin the inning.
 
Drexel answered right back putting up one run in the bottom half of the fourth inning followed by another four runs in the bottom of the fifth off of a Paula Ueno two-RBI triple and Taylor M. Lee two-run home run.
 
Wagner rallied for two runs in top of the seventh when junior center fielder Brianna Tredway (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) doubled to left field to score freshman shortstop Erica Krumbine (Freehold, NJ/Saint John Vianney) who had walked to get on base. Serrato singled to advance Tredway to third base before Gilbert hit Tredway home with a single to right center.
 
Gilbert and Serrato both finished the contest 2-for-3 with one run scored. Gilbert was credited with three of the four Wagner RBIs.
 
The Seahawks registered seven hits from five different batters. The other two hits came from junior third baseman Aerika High (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and freshman second baseman Karen Prihoda (Hamilton Square, NJ/The Lawrenceville School).

In game two, strong Dragon and Seahawk defense led to a scoreless three innings before Wagner ignited the bats in the fourth inning.
 
High led off the top of the fourth it a rip up the middle and advanced to second on a Prihoda sacrificed bunt. Krumbine then singled to score High to take a 1-0 lead.
 
Sophomore first baseman Maddie Marable (Reno, NV/Earl Wooster) laced a solo home run to left center in the sixth inning to increase the Wagner lead to 2-0.
 
The Seahawks added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when Prihoda singled to left center to score Drew Duffy (Phoenix, AZ/Centennial), who was pinch running for Gilbert. Gilbert had singled up the middle earlier in the inning.
 
Trailing 3-0 into the bottom of the seventh, the Dragons posed a threat notching one run and then loading the bases with two outs. Wagner's junior Gina Massaro (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) sealed the deal however, striking out Drexel's Sharon Zamora swinging to end the game and secure the 3-1 victory.
 
With the win, Massaro improves to 4-2 in the circle. The Pennsylvania product went the distance in game two, pitching all 7.0 innings allowing just one run on seven hits with six strikeouts.
 
Wagner returns for the Northeast Conference (NEC) regular season weekend finale. The Seahawks travel to Emmitsburg, MD to face the Mountaineers for a 1:00 pm doubleheader that was scheduled earlier in the season but postponed due to inclement weather conditions. The Green & White then return to campus the following day, Sunday, May 7 for a rescheduled senior day against the visiting LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds. Sunday's doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
