Albany, NY – The #20 Wagner (21-9, 6-0) women's water polo team defeated #23 Marist 11-9 and VMI 16-8 to secure two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) victories on Saturday, April 9. In the process the class of 2016 become the programs all-time leader in victories as they accumulated their 97th win as part of the Seahawk women's water polo squad. The senior class comprised of
Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD/ Broadneck),
Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia/ Mountain Creek) and
Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA/ San Ramon Valley) have now won at least 20 games in each season they have competed while also playing significant roles in back-to-back MAAC championships.
Wagner 11 Marist 9 (Score Sheet)In a rematch of the 2015 MAAC Championship game the Seahawks were once again victorious over the Red Foxes by a two goal margin. Wagner, who defeated Marist 10-8 a season ago in the MAAC title game, bested the Red Foxes 11-9 led by
Jess Lundgren who totaled six goals and three assists while adding three steals.
Sophomore
Lacey Anderson (Thousand Oaks, CA/ Westlake) opened the game with a score less than 45 seconds into competition but her effort was quickly countered as Marist tallied a goal only seconds later to knot the game at 1-1. Lundgren found the back of the net for two scores in the opening stanza, one off a feed from sophomore
Elise Begg (Newbury Park, CA/ Newbury) as the Seahawks jumped out to an early 3-1 lead. The Red Foxes answered with a 3-0 run of their own, holding the Seahawks scoreless in the second period, to take a 4-3 advantage into halftime.
The Green & White's offensive prowess was on display in the second half as they accumulated eight goals total, including five in the third quarter. Lundgren tallied four scores in the second half of action with Doerfler adding two of her own. Begg entered the scoring column with a single goal as did freshman
Erica Hardy (Montreal, Quebec/ St. Thomas).
Junior goalie
Emily Riddle (Edmonton, Alberta/ Dr. E.P. Scarlett) was key in net for the Seahawks, registering nine blocks while pacing a defense that only allowed five second half goals.
Wagner 16 VMI 8 (Score Sheet)In the squad's second game of the day the Green & White would deliver a sound all-around performance to defeat the Keydets by a count of 16-8.
The Seahawks hit home for five goals in each of the first three quarters led by the senior trio of Doerfler, Lundgren and Rodriguez who each recorded a minimum of three goals. Lundgren led the charge as she registered a staggering seven goals on only nine shots to go along with three assists. Doerfler totaled three scores and an assist while Rodriguez tallied four goals and dished out four helpers.
Joining the seniors in the scoring column was sophomore
Kimberly Watson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec/ John Rennie) who fired home two strikes in the contest. Begg and Hardy each passed out two assists with Riddle blocking four shots.
The Seahawks are back in action April 10 against Iona and Siena.
