2016 Wagner Water Polo MAAC Interview
Staten Island, NY – The #19 Wagner (27-9, 12-0 MAAC) women's water polo team begin its title defense Saturday, April 30 at 12:00 p.m. against Villanova in the opening semifinal round at the 2016 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships held on the campus of Marist College.
The Seahawks, the defending back-to-back MAAC Champions are the #1 seed after secure a 12-0 mark in league play. The Wildcats and Green & White squared-off twice in the regular season with Wagner claiming victories by scores of 14-4 and 17-8.
#2 seed Marist takes on #3 seed Iona in the second semifinal game scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
Wagner has been led by their three senior captains;
Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia/ Mountain Creek),
Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA/ San Ramon Valley), and
Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD/ Broadneck).
Lundgren was a dominant playmaker all season long in the conference accumulating a league leading 196 points. Lundgren topped the MAAC single season goal record, breaking Maggie Wood's record of 119 scores from 2011 as she tallied 137 for the year.
Doerfler registered 90 goals and drawing a team leading 64 exclusions, while battling for position from the center position.
Rodriguez set the Wagner singles season record for assists with 114 and field blocks with 32. Her 114 assists lead the conference.
Scouting Villanova
The Wildcats are led by goalie Julie Conrath, the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year who totaled a conference best 333 saves. On the offensive end Naomi Ng and Dominque Clark are threats to score at anytime of the contest.
