Teaneck, NJ – After dropping a 1-0 decision to Fairleigh Dickinson in game one of Saturday's Northeast Conference (NEC) doubleheader, the Wagner softball team closed out the nightcap with a 9-0 shutout against the Knights.
With the split, the Seahawks are now 19-24-0, 4-8 in the NEC while the Knights are 12-29 and 5-5 in conference play.
Junior centerfielder
Brianna Tredway (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) concluded the day 4-for-7 with three RBIs and one run scored.
Game One Recap: Fairleigh Dickinson 1 Wagner 0
It was a battle between the defenses as the contest remained scoreless heading into the seventh inning when freshman Kellie Natham delivered a walk-off RBI single down the right field line to score freshman Reanna Cervantes, who had tripled right before.
Wagner had a couple of chances, leaving two runners on base in both in the third and fourth innings. In the top half of the fourth inning, back-to-back singles by sophomore
Maddie Marable (Reno, NV/Earl Wooster) and freshman second baseman
Karen Prihoda (Hamilton Square, NJ/The Lawrenceville School) put runners on first and second with no outs. Junior third baseman
Aerika High (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) executed a sacrifice bunt to move Marable and Prihoda into scoring position, now with one out. The Seahawks were unable to score however, as the Knights' pitcher struck out the following two Seahawks.
Tredway was 2-for-3 with two singles while High was 1-for-3 with a double down the left field line.
Sophomore
Morgan Brown (Buckeye, AZ/Verrado) suffered the loss, despite striking out four batters and scattering just three hits with one walk in 6.1 innings pitched.
Game Two Recap: Wagner 9 Fairleigh Dickinson 0
After a scoreless first inning in game two, Wagner broke open the game taking a comfortable 7-0 lead in the top half of the second inning. The Seahawks never looked back as they posted another two runs in the sixth inning en route to run-ruling the Knights 9-0.
Freshman catcher
Jessica Carlucci (Manalapan, NJ/Saint John Vianney) got things started after she was walked to begin the second inning. Sophomore
Drew Duffy (Phoenix, AZ/Verrado) then came in to pinch run for Carlucci. Marable, the next batter was also walked and then Prihoda bunted to load the bases with no outs.
High singled to third base to score Duffy and then Marable scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0 with no outs. Back-to-back walks scored Prihoda when Fairleigh Dickinson made a pitching change. This didn't faze the Seahawks however, as Tredway faced the new pitcher first, lacing a double to deep left center to score three more runs and make it a 6-0 game. Carlucci had a SAC fly out to left field to score the final run of the second inning.
Freshman shortstop
Erica Krumbine (Freehold, NJ/Saint John Vianney) led off the top of the sixth inning with a single and then advanced to third base when freshman right fielder
Lauren Serrato (Litchfield, AZ/Verrado) launched a double to left center. Junior left fielder
Hana Gilbert (Valley Center, CA/Valley Center) then scored Krumbine on a fielder's choice followed up with Serrato scoring to secure the 9-0 win in six innings.
Junior
McKaleigh Goodale (Bradenton, FL/Lakewood Ranch) tossed the shutout, giving up a minuscule one hit in the bottom of the third inning while striking out one batter.
Tredway paced the Seahawks going 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and one run scored while Prihoda was 2-for-3 with one run scored.
The senior day doubleheader against LIU Brooklyn scheduled for tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. has been postponed due to weather conditions to next Sunday, May 8. The first pitch is set to be thrown at 12:00 p.m.
