Results (HTML)Staten Island, NY - The Wagner men's tennis team concluded the 2015-16 regular season by posting a 7-0 victory over Coppin State on Tuesday afternoon at the Wagner Tennis Courts.
With the win, the Seahawks finish with an 8-13 overall record and 1-5 during Northeast Conference (NEC) play while the Eagles finish the year at 2-14 overall and 2-3 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) action.
"Our guys played extremely well this afternoon in our last match before we enter the NEC Tournament," commented head coach
Jason Sinkoff. "Even though it was a non-conference match, we treated as such, and our players responded.
Freshman
Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa/Kersney College Secondary School) and
Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot) picked up their ninth doubles victory of the season and earned the duo's fifth out of the No. 1 Flight doubles spot as they defeated Christian Duchnak and Gabriel Franca, 6-0.
Freshman
Ilya Kneppelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands/Scala College Secondary School) and sophomore
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) improved to 14-6 as a tandem as they defeated Gavin Lewis and Andres Diaz, 6-1, to secure the doubles point for the Seahawks in No. 2 doubles. The pair improved to 11-6 in dual matches this season.
Sophomore
Allen Wang (Clovis, CA/Buchanan) and freshman
John Andersson (Gislaved, Sweden/Gardesskolan) won by default at No. 3 doubles.
"Our primary focus this week was getting off to a quick start, and we did just that with the doubles play," Sinkoff added. "Guys closed on the net, stayed aggressive all match long."
In singles play, Wang won his 20th career singles match via straight-sets over Zaipo Oula. Sandy won his tenth singles match of the season, cruising to a 6-2; 6-0 triumph over Franca. Poland was victorious in No. 3 singles over Lewis, 6-0; 6-1 for his tenth win of the season.
Boyd continued his dominant run in No. 4 play, picking up a 6-1; 6-3 win over Diaz to improve to 33-15 all-time and 27-12 in dual matches for his young career. His doubles teammate, Kneppelhout, needed three sets to match Boyd for the team-lead in wins, as the Netherlands native picked up his 15th win of the season, 2-6; 6-1; 6-2.
The Wagner men's tennis team will be the No. 5 seed as they will square off against the No. 4 seeded Sacred Heart University Pioneers at 9:30 a.m on Friday, April 22 from the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ.
