Rull Valvieso & Harris Victorious In Final Home Match; Women's Tennis Defeats Mount St. Mary's, 5-2, On Senior Day

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's tennis team picked up a 5-2 victory over Northeast Conference (NEC) rival, Mount St. Mary's, on Monday morning. 

With the win, the Seahawks conclude the regular season with an 8-6 record and a 3-3 league mark.  The Mountaineers ended the year with a 4-16 overall record and 0-2 in league action.

"I am thrilled with our team's performance this morning," commented second-year head coach Adrienn Hidvegi. "We enjoyed a tremendous season, and we look forward to the upcoming NEC Tournament." 

Before the start of this morning's match, Wagner recognized its two senior student-athletes, Marina Rull Valvieso  (Barcelona, Spain/IES Antony Cumella [Tarleton State]) and Jenna Harris (Fountain Hills, AZ/Fountain Hills). 

"I am so proud of our two seniors, Marina and Jenna, who truly exhibit what it means to be a student-athlete," added Hidvegi. "The hard-work and dedication they put into their craft on the courts translated into success inside the classroom, and we are truly blessed to have them as a part of our program. 


The Seahawks clinched the first overall point of the match after taking two of three doubles matches.  The tandem of junior Madison Pautsch (Costa Mesa, CA/Edison) and sophomore Carolyn Gibson (Windermere, FL/IMG Academy) earned a 6-1 triumph over the duo of Emma Blake and Isabella Draper. For Pautsch and Gibson, improve to 4-4 as a team and 4-1 out of the No. 3 doubles spot. 

With the doubles point tied at 1-1, the duo of junior Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High School [Southeastern Louisana]) and Rull Valvieso defeated Mount's Kelly Smith and Erin Benefiel, 6-3. With the win, the Seahawks took a 1-0 lead in the match. For Sagwal & Rull Valvieso, the pair earned its team-leading 11th doubles victory and ninth out of the Flight No. 1 position.  

Sagwal put Wagner up 2-0 as she cruised to a 6-1; 6-1 win over Smith to pick up her a team-best 12th victory of the season.  According to the league website, Sagwal has the highest win percentage in all singles played in a minimum of five decisions as she posted a .750 win percentage (12-4). 

Rull Valvieso, playing in her final home singles match, posted her 15th career victory and gave Wagner a 3-0 lead after defeating Brittany Poje, 6-1; 6-2.  For the season, the Barcelona, Spain native picked up her sixth triumph of the year and evened her conference record to 3-3. 

The Mount posted back-to-back victories at No. 4 and No. 3 singles to cut the deficit to 3-2.  Harris, who also played in her final home contest, defeated Draper, 6-2; 6-2, to run her record to 7-4 on the season, 6-3 in dual matches and 6-2 out of the No. 6 singles spot.  For her career, the Fountain Hills, AZ native earned her 20th career victory. 

Pautsch was also victorious, posting a 6-2; 6-2 win over Blake in No. 5 action.  For Pautsch, finished out the season with her eighth singles victory and earned her 19th career victory in the process.  

The NEC has announced the seedings for the upcoming NEC Tournament, which is set to begin on Friday, April 22 at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ.  

After posting its second straight winning season, the Green & White will be the No. 6 seed in the upcoming tournament and will tangle with the No. 3 seed, the Sacred Heart University Pioneers.  The match is set to begin not before 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
