Smithfield, RI - Wagner's late comeback attempt came up short as the Seahawks dropped the second game of today's doubleheader, 3-2, at Bryant this afternoon.

With the loss, Wagner falls to 10-21, 5-10 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play while the Bulldogs improve to 23-7 overall and 12-1 in league play.

Junior Brendan Benecke (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) and senior John Lynn (Wallingford, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) each drove pivotal runs after being inserted into the game as pinch-hitters. Junior RHP Austin Goeke (Bordentown, NJ/The Hun School) was sharp on the hill, allowing just six hits and three earned runs while going the distance, adding four strikeouts in suffering the hard-luck defeat (3-3).

Zach Wood went 2-for-2 with a run scored and a walk for the Bulldogs, while John Nollet, Mickey Gasper, and Dan Cellucci each drove in a run for the home team.  Bryant's James Davitt hurled five innings of three-hit ball, allowing one run while walking two and striking out four in picking up the win (4-1). Justin Snyder pitched two scoreless innings of relief for his fifth save of the season.

After a scoreless first inning, Bryant scored twice in the bottom of the second to take the early lead. Nollet singled up the middle which allowed Wood to cross the plate for the game's first run.  After Nollet stole second, Cellucci singled to left center which brought in Nollet as Bryant took a 2-0 lead.

Wagner got on the board in the top of the fifth. A single by sophomore designated hitter Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville), followed by a walk to classmate, 3B Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]), put runners on first and second with only one out.

Wagner head coach Jim Carone summoned Benecke to pinch hit for freshman 1B Anthony Harrold (Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). After a lengthy at-bat, Benecke delivered an RBI single to left field which scored Godino.  The rally continued as sophomore 2B Kyle Brey (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for junior SS Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep).  On the ensuing 1-0 pitch, Mascelli grounded into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Bryant tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to increase the lead to 3-1 as Gasper, who pinch-hit for Nollet, singled to left field, scoring Nick Angelini from third.  Wagner made the most of its chance in the top of the seventh. Godino made it to second after a throwing error by Bryant's third baseman, Jacob Marotta, moved him into scoring position. The next batter, Mazzio, grounded out to second, allowing Godino to get to third with one out.

The Seahawks got within one, 3-2, as Lynn sent an RBI grounder to third, allowing Godino to score.  Freshman Anthony Pecora (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck), pinch-hitting for Brey, worked the count full before taking the payoff pitch up the middle for a single, setting up the tying run with Mascelli stepping to the plate. Snyder fell behind in the count, 2-1, before inducing a game-ending grounder as Bryant held on the for the one-run victory.

These two teams will be back on the diamond tomorrow, April 17, with a 1:00 p.m. start.  Senior LHP Matt Morris (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) is scheduled to start for Wagner.
