UWLAX WebsiteBoston, MA – First-year Wagner head women's lacrosse coach
Katie Rowan, who was the most decorated player in Syracuse University history and a member of the 2009 and 2013 USA World Cup gold medalist team, was selected by the Long Island Sound in the inaugural United Women's Lacrosse League's (UWLX) draft on Wednesday.
The UWLX is comprised of four teams, the Philadelphia Force, Boston Storm, Long Island Sound and Baltimore Rid, and will play its inaugural season this spring and summer. Rowan was the 34th overall pick in the draft and the Sounds' ninth selection.
"I am honored to have been selected by the Long Island Sound to play in the inaugural season of the United Women's Lacrosse League," said Rowan. "The UWLX, and the opportunity to play professionally post-college, is a dream come true for myself and so many women's lacrosse players."
The historic event, aired on Lax Sports Network, featured 40 selections from a pool of 250 athletes. Current NCAA seniors were not included and will be drafted in the post-collegiate draft following Memorial Day weekend NCAA Tournament play.
"I can't thank the Founders, Digit Murphy and Aronda Kirby, Commissioner, Michele DeJuliis, and the league staff enough for making this historic moment happen," Rowan continued. "I look forward to getting started with my Sound coaches and teammates, and for the season ahead!"
Rowan's 2016 Seahawks continue their quest for a berth in next month's Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships today when they meet the Sacred Heart Pioneers on the road today at 3:00 p.m.
Led by
reigning NEC Defensive Player of the Week Shea Gegan (Belmar, NJ/Manasquan), Wagner enters today's play with a 1-1 conference mark and an overall record of 3-8. The Pioneers are also 1-1 in the NEC and bring a 5-6 mark into today's action.
On Sunday, April 17, the Seahawks complete their two-game NEC road wing with an 11:00 a.m. matchup with the Long Island Brooklyn University Blackbirds.
