Fairfield, CT – The Wagner softball team defeated Fairfield University 4-3 in game two of Wednesday's doubleheader after dropping the first contest 3-1.

With the split, the Seahawks are now 13-18 overall while the Stags move are 15-14 on the year.

The Seahawks were paced offensively by the freshmen combination of Erica Krumbine (Freehold, NJ/Saint John Vianney) and Jessica Carlucci (Manalapan, NJ/Saint John Vianney) who each went 4-for-6 on the day at the plate.

Game One Recap - Fairfield 3 Wagner 1

Fairfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings in the game one of Wednesday's doubleheader.

Wagner posed a threat in the top of the third off of back-to-back singles by Krumbine and junior Brianna Tredway (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) to put runners on first and third with two outs. However, freshman Lauren Serrato (Litchfield Park, AZ/Verrado) grounded out to the Fairfield shortstop to end the top half of the inning.

The score remained 3-0 until the Seahawks began a seventh inning threat with a leadoff single to left field from sophomore Morgan Brown (Buckeye, AZ/Verrado). Sophomore Drew Duffy (Phoenix, AZ/Verrado) pinch ran for Brown but was thrown out at second when sophomore Matie Reece (Covina, CA/Gabrielino) reached on a fielder's choice. Krumbine then laced a double to left center to score Reece and get Wagner on the board, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

This would end up being the lone Seahawk run as strong Fairfield defense stopped the Wagner threat.

Krumbine paced the Seahawks, going 3-for-3 with two singles and a RBI double, while Carlucci (Manalapan, NJ/Saint John Vianney) was 2-for-3.

Sophomore Maddie Marable (Reno, NV/Earl Wooster) and freshman Karen Prihoda (Hamilton Square, NJ/The Lawrenceville School) each registered a single for the Seahawks.

Brown pitched well in defeat, pitching the entire game while striking out five batters in the process.

Game 2 Recap: Wagner 4 Fairfield 3

A game of back and forth lead changes ended up in the Seahawks' favor, as Wagner defeated Fairfield 4-3 in game two of Wednesday's doubleheader.

Wagner got things started right away taking an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Serrato was walked and then stole second base. Carlucci delivered a single to left center and scored Serrato.

Fairfield put up a run in the bottom half of the first inning. The Stags' Tori Reed was walked and stole second when Cynthia Meringer came in to pinch run for her. The next batter, Courtney Hankins, singled through the left side to score Meringer and tie it up, 1-1.

Fairfield took a 2-1 lead in the second inning. A Prihoda error at second base allowed the Stags' Nicole Capra to reach first base. Capra then stole second and was driven home by Lauren Filicia.

Krumbine led off the top of the third for Wagner, taking advantage of a Fairfield shortstop error to get on base and then stole second. Tredway executed a sacrifice bunt to move Krumbine to third and Marable singled to score Krumbine and tie the game at 2-2.

Wagner pulled away in the top of the fifth inning, notching two more runs. Krumbine ignited the Seahawk rally by launching a double to left field followed by two walks to Serrato and Marable. Two consecutive errors made by the Fairfield catcher scored Krumbine and Serrato and gave the Seahawks a 4-2 lead.

Two hits in the bottom of the fifth inning cut the Fairfield deficit to one at 4-3.

A Wagner pitching change put junior McKaleigh Goodale (Bradenton, FL/Lakewood Ranch) in the circle in the bottom of the fifth.

Goodale and a strong Seahawk defense combined to keep the Stags at bay, as Wagner secured the 4-3 victory.

Junior Gina Massaro (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) pitched the first 4.1 innings, striking out three batters while scattering six hits en route to picking up her second win of the season.

Goodale was credited with her second save of the year. The sunshine state native stuck out three batters in 2.2 innings pitched while only allowing one hit. The first strikeout came in the bottom of the fifth when Fairfield had the potential-tying run on second base to close out the inning.

The Seahawks return to the diamond for two Northeast Conference doubleheaders this weekend. Wagner travels to Smithfield, RI to take on Bryant at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, before heading to New Britain, CT to face Central Connecticut on Sunday, April 17. The second doubleheader is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
