Staten Island, NY - The Wagner baseball team jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings, and scored another eight times over the next five innings, en route to a 16-2 Northeast Conference (NEC) win over the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils in game one of today's doubleheader.

With the win, the Seahawks improve to 9-10 overall, and a perfect 5-0 in the NEC, while the Blue Devils fall to 7-14 and 0-5 in league play.

Senior CF Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ/West-Windsor Plainsboro South) enjoyed a stellar first game, going 5-for-5 with four RBIs. Sophomore LF Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville) and junior backstop Brendan Benecke (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) each went 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs in the contest.  Reigning NEC Rookie of the Week Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) went 1-for-5, the one coming off a two-run round tripper in the bottom of the fifth.

Junior RHP Austin Goeke (Bordentown, NJ/The Hun School) went six strong innings, allowing eight hits and only two runs while striking out two batters to earn his third victory of the season (3-1). Freshman reliever Douglas Molnar (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) pitched three effective innings in relief of Goeke, surrendering just two hits to earn his first career save.

Central's Casey Brown tossed four innings, giving up 15 hits and ten runs (seven earned) as he took the loss, dropping his season record to 1-4 on the year.

The Blue Devils scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning as Nick Garland singled to left center field, scoring Matt Martinez from second base giving Central a 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils nearly scored a play earlier as Mitch Guilmette was caught in a rundown trying to score from third on Martinez fielder's choice.

The Seahawks responded in the bottom half of the inning with four runs. Back-to-back singles from freshman 3B Will Johnson (Toms River, NJ/Toms River High School East) and Benecke had runners on first and second with one out.  A single by sophomore 2B Kyle Brey (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) loaded the bases for Godino. The second-year Seahawk laced Wagner's fourth-straight hit to left field, scoring Johnson and tying the game at 1-1.  Sophomore SS Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE] hit a dribbler that was fielded by Brown, who took the out at first which allowed Benecke to score giving the Seahawks a 2-1 lead.

Facing a 2-2 count, Ruta smashed a single to deep left field that plated both Godino and Brey giving the Seahawks a 4-1 lead. After holding CCSU at bay in the top of the third, Wagner went back to work in the bottom of the stanza.

A pair of singles from a pair of freshmen in 1B Anthony Harrold (Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and RF Anthony Pecora (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) gave the Seahawks runners on first and second. Benecke drove in the Seahawks' fifth run with a single to right field which brought in Harrold and Pecora crossed the plate on a throwing error by the shortstop giving Wagner a 6-1 lead. The Green & White added two more runs to increase the lead to 8-1 as  Brey singled to left and Godino doubled to center scoring Brey.

The Seahawks erupted six more times in the bottom of the fifth to increase its total to 14-1. Ruta sent a two-run double to right center. Capra followed by a mammoth two-run shot off for his third home run of the season. Benecke knocked in his second RBI of the day with a single to left scoring Harrold, and Pecora scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Wagner tacked on two more in the eighth as Harrold doubled to right center, scoring pinch-hitter Trey Nicosia (State College, PA/State College Area) and Ruta to give the Seahawks its first home victory of the season and ninth win overall.
