#17 Women’s Water Polo Defeats Brown 13-3, Falls 10-6 To #19 Indiana

Boston, MA – The #17 Wagner (12-8) women's water polo squad split decisions on the opening day of competition at the Harvard Invitational. The Seahawks defeated Brown (4-12) by a score of 13-3 while slipping to #19 Indiana (8-4) 10-6.

The Seahawks jumped out to a quick lead as senior attacker Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA/ San Ramon Valley) found a cutting Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia/ Mountain Creek) just 12 seconds into the contest. Indiana would tally twice before Lacey Anderson (Thousand Oaks, CA/ Westlake) scored with 41 seconds remaining in the first quarter to knot the game at 2-2.

The Hoosiers netted to separate man-up opportunities and a third goal to take a 5-3 lead into the half. The Rodriguez-Lundgren combination would serve-up the only score in the second period for the Green & White.

Wagner cut the deficit to 5-4 early in the third quarter with Rodriguez passing out her third helper of the contest as she found sophomore Kimberly Watson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec/ John Rennie) for the goal. Indiana responded with three goals of their own in the period to regain an 8-4 advantage entering the final quarter of play.

Lundgren returned the favor for Rodriguez as she assisted both of Rodriguez's scores in the fourth period. Indiana tallied two more goals to bring the final score to 10-6 in favor of the Hoosiers.

The Seahawk offense found a rhythm in their second contest of the day tallying for 13 scores against Brown. Wagner tossed in three goals in the opening stanza with Watson registering two goals and Rodriguez recording one.

The Seahawks would continue to thrive on the offensive end, scoring four times in the second period to Brown's one. Lundgren rattled the cage twice in the quarter as Anderson and Rodriguez each scored a goal apiece.

Lundgren ripped the nets four times in the second half to bring her game total to six.  Sophomore Elise Begg (Newbury Park, CA/ Newbury) found the back of the net in the second with Anderson hitting home twice to give the Seahawks a 13-3 victory.

Wagner is back in action tomorrow, March 6 at 2:00 PM against #11 Hartwick.
