Emmitsburg, MD – Behind a 16-run outburst over the final four innings, the Wagner baseball team picked up its first Northeast Conference (NEC) victory of the season, defeating the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, 20-4, in game one of a four-game conference tilt on Thursday afternoon.
With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 5-9 overall and 1-0 in league play while the Mountaineers fall to 2-13; 1-4 in conference play.
Junior SS
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) and freshman 1B
Anthony Harrold (Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) each had 4 RBIs on the day with
Mascelli finishing a career-best 5-for-6 with four runs scored and two home runs while Harrold went 1-for-6 with a run scored and a round-tripper.
Sophomore 3B
Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, a homerun and 3 RBIs. Freshman DH
Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) went 2-for-4, with two runs scored, three RBIS and a walk.
Sophomore LF
Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville), senior CF
Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ/West-Windsor Plainsboro South) and sophomore 2B
Kyle Brey (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) each added two RBIs in the win. The Seahawks blasted a season-best five home runs with Mascelli (2), Mazzio, Godino, and Harrold each going yard.
Junior RHP
Austin Goeke (Bordentown, NJ/The Hun School) hurled six innings of five-hit ball, not allowing a single run while striking out eight batters in earning his second victory of the season.
In the first inning, Wagner struck for the game's first two tallies. Mascelli laced a single up the middle. A two-out walk to Godino set the stage for the Seahawks next batter, Capra, who ripped a double to left field which plated across Mascelli and Godino, giving the visitors an early 2-0 advantage.
With one-out in the in the top of the fifth, Mascelli clobbered his first home run of the game to left centerfield, giving Wagner a 3-0 edge. The next batter, Mazzio went deep for his first round-tripper of the season, which gave propelled the Green & White to a 4-0 lead.
The Mountaineers had a golden chance in the bottom of the fifth. After Goeke was able to retire Tyler Post and Vaughn Parker II via the strikeout, back-to-back singles to center from Patrick Causa and Joshua Lenig gave the Mount runners at the corners. Goeke regained his composure on the mound and retired Tommy Quealy swinging at strike three to end the threat.
In the Wagner sixth, the Seahawks scored six runs on four hits to take a 10-0 lead. Capra led off the sixth with a single to left centerfield. Facing one-out, sophomore
Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) and junior backstop
Brendan Benecke (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) each drew free passes, loading the bases for Brey. The second-year Seahawk walked on four pitches, plating across Capra in giving Wagner a 5-0 lead.
Mascelli singled through the right side on a 2-1 pitch that scored Cala as Wagner now led 6-0. Mazzio continued the scoring for the Seahawks with double to right center plating both Brey and Benecke as Wagner went up 8-0. A single by Ruta scored both Mazzio and Mascelli as Wagner ended the frame.
In Wagner's seventh, the Seahawks batted around, scoring eight runs in the stanza, taking an 18-0 lead. Brey flew out to center scoring Cala for the eleventh run of the contest. Mascelli took a 1-0 delivery from Josh Little over the left field fence for his second blast of the afternoon in giving Wagner a 13-0 lead. Four straight walks from Little plated the 14th run of the ballgame for Wagner before Mount made the call to the bullpen for Nathan Seltsam.
On the very first pitch from Seltsam, Harrold smashed his first career grand slam as Wagner led 18-0. In the bottom half of the stanza, the Mountaineers' offense scored four runs on just one hit. Wagner tacked on two more runs in the top of the eighth as Godino belted a two-run shot over the left field wall.
For the second straight meeting, the Seahawks have put up 20-or more runs as in the series finale back on May 3; the Seahawks defeated the Mountaineers, 20-6.
These two teams will be back in action tomorrow, March 25, as the two squad will meet in a doubleheader, consisting of seven innings. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Live stats will be available courtesy of MountAtheltics.com
