Women’s Water Polo Battles #9 Arizona State, Falls 8-6

Score Sheet

Tempe, AZ
– The #16(T) Wagner (15-9) women's water polo team battled #9 Arizona State (10-3) before eventually falling by a final score of 8-6.

The Seahawks had difficulty scoring in the opening half however they maintained a high level of defense to remain in striking distance. The Green & White tallied one goal in the second half, during the second quarter of play, which was scored by sophomore Elise Begg (Newbury Park, CA/ Newbury) off an assist from senior Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA/ San Ramon Valley). The Sun Devils registered four goals in the first half to enter halftime leading by a count of 4-1.

Junior goalie Emily Riddle (Edmonton, Alberta/ Dr. E.P. Scarlett) was key in net for Wagner as she recorded five blocks during the contest and helped lead the defensive charge. The Seahawks found their offensive rhythm during the third quarter as the team posted four goals during the period. Rodriguez fired home two smooth left-handed scores while Begg tossed in her second of the contest. Senior Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia/ Mountain Creek) found the back of the cage during the third period as well. The Sun Devils Katie Sverchek rattled the cage on a five meter penalty with Abby Kerth striking the back of the net as well for Arizona State during the third quarter. Wagner trailed Arizona State 6-5 with only one period of play remaining.

Lundgren hit home for a score less than two minutes into the fourth period to knot the game at 6-6. The Sun Devils would respond as Maud Koopman scored followed by a Daisy Carter man-up goal that would bring the final score to 8-6 in favor of the Sun Devils. The Seahawks had a few late chances as sophomore Kimberly Watson's shot attempt late in the fourth hit the post and Rodriguez's last second shot was saved.

The Seahawks will next be in action when they begin conference play on March 26 against Siena.
