DeLand, FL – The Wagner softball team (7-9) split a pair of games on the last day of the Stetson Classic, falling 4-1 to the University of Tennessee at Martin and then claiming a 9-0 shutout over Binghamton in five innings this evening.
Sophomore pitcher
Morgan Brown (Buckeye, AZ/Verrado) and freshman shortstop
Erica Krumbine (Freehold, NJ/Saint John Vianney) were named to the Stetson Classic All-Tournament team for their efforts on the field this weekend.
Brown threw a two-hitter shutout in the final game of the Stetson Classic against Binghamton with just one walk and five strikeouts. Krumbine was a huge threat defensively as well as in the box, finishing the weekend 5-for-9 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Game 1: University of Tennessee at Martin 4, Wagner 1 Wagner scored its lone run in the first inning off of a RBI single by sophomore first baseman
Maddie Marable (Reno, NV/Earl Wooster).
UT Martin answered right back in top of the second inning and then secured the victory with another two runs in sixth and one in the seventh.
Junior leftfielder
Hana Gilbert (Valley Center, CA/Valley Center) led the Seahawks with two hits and one run scored.
Freshman catcher
Jessica Carlucci (Manalapan, NJ/Saint John Vianney) and Krumbine each had a hit for the Seahawks.
In the circle, junior
McKaleigh Goodale (Bradenton, FL/Lakewood Ranch) went the distance pitching the complete seven innings, giving up four runs on six hits with two strikeouts.
Game 2: Wagner 9 Binghamton 0 Wagner swept Binghamton over the weekend, claiming the second game in commanding fashion as Brown threw a shutout and the Seahawks run-ruled the Bearcats in just five innings.
Junior third baseman
Aerika High (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) sparked the momentum for the Seahawks when she launched a two-run homerun over the left field fence to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
Wagner powered the bats up again in the bottom of the third, putting up another three runs to increase the lead to 5-0. Marable got it started with a RBI single to center field to score freshman right fielder
Lauren Serrato (Litchfield Park, AZ/Verrado), who had walked to lead off the inning. Carlucci singled up the middle to score Marable and then senior catcher
Megan Moore (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) had the SAC fly to right field to score Gilbert who was on third.
The Seahawks weren't finished yet however, in the next inning they tacked on another four runs to secure the shutout. Two singles by High and Krumbine started the inning, followed up a Serrato RBI double to left center. With bases loaded and two outs after junior centerfielder
Brianna Tredway (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) walked, Carlucci made her to the plate and was walked to score Krumbine. Senior
Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) pinch hit and found a gap in left field to score two more runs to close out the game.
The Seahawks tallied nine hits in the victory, High was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Wagner travels back to Staten Island after a 10 day trip to the Sunshine state. The Seahawks return to competition on Saturday, March 26, when they travel to New Haven, CT for a doubleheader against Yale.
