Providence, RI – The #16 Wagner (5-6) women's water polo team finished the Brown-Bruno Classic with a 6-3 victory over host school Brown (1-6).
The first half was a defensive battle as Brown and Wagner combined for four goals. Brown outscored the Seahawks 2-1 in the first stanza with
Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA/ San Ramon Valley) scoring for the Green & White off of a counter chance. Rodriguez tallied the lone goal of the second quarter also as her shot ricocheted off the bar into the net. The Seahawks and Bears entered halftime deadlocked at two apiece.
The lower scoring affair continued in the second half with the Seahawks capitalizing on two scoring opportunities in the third quarter to the Bears one. Freshman
Erica Hardy (Montreal, Quebec/ St. Thomas) and Rodriguez each found the back of the net in the quarter. Rodriguez's score would secure the hat trick for her in the contest. The scoreboard read 4-3 in favor of Wagner after the third period.
The Wagner defense held strong in the fourth, not allowing a score from the Bears. The Seahawks offense would tally twice more to bring the final to 6-3 off goals from
Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia/ Mountain Creek) and a second from Hardy.
Junior goalie
Emily Riddle (Edmonton, Alberta/ Dr. E.P. Scarlett) was key in the victory as she registered seven saves.
