Staten Island, NY - With four players scoring in double figures, the Wagner men's basketball team earned a gutsy 68-66 win at Morgan State on Saturday afternoon.
In halting a three-game losing streak, the Seahawks improve to 3-5 on the season while the Bears fall to 3-7.
Junior guard
Corey Henson (Upper Marlboro, MD/DeMatha Catholic) poured in a team-high 19 points, which included a season-best 5-of-8 from three-point range, and redshirt sophomore forward
AJ Sumbry (East Windsor, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep [Quinnipiac]) posted his first career double-double, scoring 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field to go along with a career-best ten rebounds in 30 minutes of play.
Senior guard
Michael Carey (Nassau, Bahamas/Lamar Consolidated [San Jacinto College]) and junior forward
Shack Scott (Paterson, NJ/The Robinson School [Monroe College]) each scored ten points on a combined 10-of-21 from the field while junior guard
JoJo Cooper (Wilmington, DE/Concord) chipped in eight points, 11 rebounds, and game-best six assists.
Morgan State's Isiah Graves led all scorers with 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while hitting 6-of-10 from the free throw line. Phillip Carr tallied 17 points and 12 rebounds while Kyle Thomas contributed 12 points in defeat.
Wagner raced out to a 9-4 lead after Henson buried the first of three long-range three-pointers. The first of the trio came off the feed from freshman
Connor Ferrell (Conyers, GA/Rockdale County [DMS Sports Academy]). Morgan State was able to trim the deficit to just one, 9-8, after Martez Cameron hit a jumper in the paint. The Seahawks erupted on a 12-5 run over the next forty-one seconds, bringing the lead back to eight, 21-13, with 11:22 to go before halftime. Scott capped the run with an emphatic alley-oop slam off the feed from Cooper.
The Bears mounted a comeback of their own, sparking a 22-14 run over the next 9:09, as Morgan State connected on 7-of-15 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line, led by Isiah Graves' nine points during the spurt, knotting the game at 35. With just thirty-five seconds left in the first half, sophomore guard/forward
Elijah Davis (Bronx, NY/Lincoln [Odessa Community College]) was able to beat his defender to the hoop for two, giving Wagner a two-point lead heading into the intermission. For the half, Wagner shot 48.3 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from beyond-the-arc despite being out-rebounded by one, 19-18.
Carr kicked off the scoring in the second half for the Bears, tying the game at 37 after connecting on a jumper. Wagner was able to build the lead back up to six, 43-37, as Carey was able to muscle in a layup chance. The Bears used a 15-8 run over 7:21 to take their first lead of the contest, 52-51 with 9:28 left in regulation, as Carr was once again the catalyst for the home team. The Green & White put an end to the run when Henson dialed up his fifth and final trifecta of the contest after Cooper was able to find his fellow classmate on the wing. Morgan State outscored Wagner over the next 6:15 and held a 63-62 lead after Carr knocked in a three-pointer from the top-of-the-key with 2:46 showing on the game clock.
After Cooper had missed the go-ahead three, Carey was able to swoop in and put back the missed opportunity, putting Wagner back up by one, 64-63, with 2:13 left in the contest. On the ensuing Bears' possession, Kyle Thomas missed a jumper that was corralled by Carr. Carr swung the ball back to Graves, who had the ball knocked away by Carey, causing the turnover that setup a Sumbry layup to give the visitors the 66-63 lead with 1:10 left. Morgan State was able to tie the ball game, as a three-pointer from Graves rattled in with fifty-three seconds to go in the game.
The Seahawks, electing not to call timeout, were able to get the ball in the hands of Henson, who drove the baseline in drawing a foul on Graves. The Upper Marlboro, MD native was able to hit on both attempts, prompting timeouts by both teams. After getting the ball across, David Syfax missed on a three-pointer that was rebounded by Carr. With two seconds left, Carr tried to put back the mishap, but his attempt banked off the side of the backboard as the Green & White escaped with the two-point win.
For the contest, Wagner shot 46.6 percent from the field while hitting close to 40.0 percent from long range. The Seahawks capitalized on their scoring chances from the paint, scoring 36 of its 68 total points from in close, while Morgan State held an advantage on the boards at 38-36.
The Wagner men's basketball team concludes it two-game road swing on December 17 as they travel to Big East members, the Providence College Friars. Tipoff from the Dunkin' Donuts Center is set for 12:00 pm and will be broadcast nationally on Fox Sports One (FS1).
