Providence, RI - The Wagner College men's basketball team dropped a 76-54 decision at BIG EAST Conference members, the Providence College Friars, on Saturday afternoon from the Dunkin' Donuts Center. which was broadcast nationally on Fox Sports One (FS1)
With the loss, Wagner falls to 3-6 on the season while the Friars earn its fifth straight win to improve to 9-2 on the year.
The Green & White was led in scoring by sophomore guard
Elijah Davis (Bronx, NY / Lincoln / Odessa College [TX]), who tossed in a career-high 13 points. Senior forward
Greg Senat (Elmont, NY / Elmont/ Marianapolis Prep ([CT]) added a season-high nine points off the bench. The 6-4 Davis nearly had his first career double-double, as he grabbed a career and team-high nine rebounds.
Providence had two players in double-figures, led by Jalen Lindsey's game-high 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting, which included 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Emmit Holt added 11 points in the victory.
Wagner jumped out to a 10-4 lead early before the Friars held the Seahawks scoreless for the next 12:47, while scoring 31 points themselves, en route to building a 45-20 halftime lead.
Despite facing an uphill climb, the Seahawks were able to force 11 second half turnovers, turning the Providence mishaps into 13 points in the second half of play. The Friars maintained its double-digit lead in the second half en route to the victory.
Wagner was the aggressor on the boards against the bigger Providence team. After the Friars entered the break with a 19-18 lead in rebounds, the Green & White, who are the Northeast Conference's (NEC) top defensive rebounding team, outperformed the Friars on the glass by 26-14 in the second half, en route to finishing with a +11 margin, 44-33, which included a sizeable 20-9 edge on the offensive glass.
The Seahawks were also able to take advantage of its second chance attempts on the afternoon, scoring 20 of its 54 off those opportunities while nearly scoring half of its points in the paint (24).
The non-conference finale for Wagner is set for Thursday, December 22 as the Seahawks will take on local rival, the College of Staten Island (CSI) Dolphins at 7:00 p.m. from the Spiro Sports Center.
