Lewisburg, PA - The first-year Wagner College men's water polo team dropped a 9-7 decision to Fordham in the program's inaugural appearance in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Championship today at Bucknell University.
In another back-and-forth match-p between the New York City rivals, three Seahawks scored two points apiece, while All-Conference First Team selection
Ciaran Wolohan (Manly, Australia/St. Aloysius [Golden West College]) registered one tally. Second-Team All-Conference selection,
Oscar Nomura (Irvine, CA/Irvine), drained the Green & White's lone goal of the first quarter on a man-up opportunity which gave the Seahawks an early 1-0 lead. Fordham's RJ Simmons tied the bout 1-1 before Jake Miller-Tolt gained the lead for the Rams by scoring on a penalty shot. The Seahawks outscored Fordham 2-1 in the second quarter behind markers from sophomore utility
Devin O'Donnell (Pointe-Claire, Quebec/Selwyn [San Diego Mesa College]) and freshman 2-meter guard
Danny Rafael (Cooper City, FL/Cooper City), to tie the contest 3-3 entering intermission.
Nomura opened the second half with a quick goal to put Wagner back into the lead, igniting a 3-0 run for the Seahawks which was completed by markers from O'Donnell and Wolohan. Despite taking its largest lead of the game by a count of 6-3, Wagner remained scoreless for the remainder of the stanza as the Rams countered with a 4-0 run.
Entering the final quarter trailing 7-6, Rafael recorded his second goal less than one minute into the stanza to tie the game at 7-7. However, Fordham standout RJ Simmons converted back-to-back tallies, registering his third and fourth goals of the game, which secured the 9-7 win for the Rams.
The Seahawks return to the pool tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in a matchup with No. 8 Connecticut College before the placement games take place on Sunday, November 20. Wagner defeated Connecticut 16-5 in its first showdown on September 9 at the Princeton Invitational.
