Men's Water Polo Polishes Off Conference Rival Fordham 11-10

Bronx, NY – The Wagner men's water polo team downed local rival Fordham University 11-10 in its first-ever meeting. The two teams (3-5) are now tied at fourth place in the Mid Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) East Region standings.

Wagner's leading scorer, junior utility Ciaran Wolohan led the Seahawks offensively with five goals to bring his total count to 46 for the season.

The Rams took an early 4-3 lead in the first quarter before trailing the Green & White for the remainder of the game. Two quick goals from Wolohan and one from freshman utility Luigi Paparella (Huntington Beach, CA/Marina) kept the Seahawks within one marker. However, freshman goalie and reigning Defensive Player of the Week, Joseph Ferraro's (Newport Beach, CA/Newport Beach) save with ten seconds on the clock sparked the rookie offense heading into the second stanza.

The Green & White rallied from behind in the second quarter to take a 6-5 lead over the Rams. Freshman driver Aaron Leighton (Lake Forest, CA/El Toro) won the sprint as Wagner controlled the lead for the remainder of the game. Less than one minute into the quarter, Wolohan registered a hat-trick on a man-up opportunity, igniting a 3-0 run for the Seahawks. Freshman 2-meter guard Danny Rafael (Cooper City, FL/Cooper City) and sophomore utility Devin O'Donnell (Pointe-Claire, Quebec/Selwyn/San Diego Mesa College) cashed in twice more before Fordham's RJ Simmons ended the Seahawks' spurt, scoring with two seconds left in the half.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth matchup as Wolohan netted both his fourth and fifth goals. Junior driver James Grady (Boca Raton, FL/Boca Raton) and freshman driver Oscar Nomura (Irvine, CA/Irvine) combined for three more tallies to give the Seahawks an 11-9 lead entering the final stanza.

The two teams remained scoreless in the final quarter before Fordham sophomore Ian Watson scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 1:39 left to play. Despite Watson's sixth marker, Wagner outlasted Fordham 11-10 to secure their third conference victory.

The Seahawks return to action on Saturday, October 15 for the Harvard Invitational. They are slated to play Harvard University for the third time this year at 1:30 pm before taking on Iona College at 6:30 pm.
