The Seahawks (5-12) are coming off a bye weekend after hosting four consecutive conference matches October 1-2, where they went 2-2. After dropping a hard-fought 13-11 contest with No. 10 Bucknell, Wagner notched a pair of impressive wins, defeating Division III power Johns Hopkins, 13-11, before knocking off the U.S. Naval Academy by a 15-13 count. The Seahawks ended the weekend with a 17-10 loss to No. 16 George Washington, despite holding the Colonials' leading scorer, Atakan Destici, to three goals.
After securing their first two conference victories, a pair of Seahawks earned Collegiate Water Polo Conference (CWPA) Weekly Honors.
Freshman goalie
Joseph Ferraro (Newport Beach, CA/Newport Harbor) was named Wagner's first-ever
Defensive Player of the Week after setting a school-record 16 blocks in the Seahawks' triumph over then Division III No. 8 Johns Hopkins. The first-year netminder went on to record 11 blocks against Navy while adding eight more rejections vs. George Washington, upping his season total to 125.
Meanwhile, freshman driver
Oscar Nomura (Irvine, CA/Irvine) garnered
Rookie of the Week honors for the second time in his collegiate career. The rookie's best performance came when he poured in six goals vs. Bucknell, as this double hat-trick set a school record. Closing out the Seahawks' first-ever homestand, Nomura found the back of the net seven more times to lead the Seahawks offensively with 13 goals.
Fordham, which dropped two spots this week in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Top 5 Poll, sits just above Wagner in the MAWPC standings in fourth place with a 3-4 record. The Rams return to the east coast after posting a 2-2 record at Pomona-Pitzer's Gary Troyer Tournament in Claremont, CA. The Rams defeated Cal Lutheran 10-6 and Occidental 6-5 after registering two consecutive losses against the Redlands (13-7) and Whittier (13-7).
