Santa Barbara, CA - #20 Wagner (3-3) women's water polo dropped a 10-6 decision to #13 UC Santa Barbara to complete the UCSB Winter Invite.
The Seahawks posted a 3-3 record in their six game slate out in Santa Barbara, CA
including a 8-7 victory over Long Beach State.
The Gauchos commanded the game early opening the contest on a 3-0 run before senior co-captain center
Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia/ Mountain Creek) would strike the back of the net for the Green & White with 6:41 remaining in the second quarter.
UC Santa Barbara tallied two goals in response to Lundgren's score before
Erica Hardy (Montreal, Quebec/ St. Thomas) found the back of the net off a
Abby Irving (Brentwood Bay, B.C./ Canadian Sport School/ Stelly's) assist. The Seahawks entered halftime trailing the Gauchos 5-2.
Lauren Martin and Miranda Schrader rattled the cage for UC Santa Barbara within the first two minutes of the third quarter to extend their led to 7-2. The Green & White followed with back-to-back scores of their own from Lundgren and senior attacker
Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA/ San Ramon Valley) to put the score at 7-4 with 1:44 left in the third period.
The Seahawks would get no closer as the Gauchos scored three of the final five goals to claim the 10-6 win.
Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD/ Broadneck) and
Kimberly Watson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec/ John Rennie) tallied the final two goals for the Green & White.
Junior goalkeeper
Emily Riddle (Edmonton, Alberta/ Dr. E.P. Scarlett) posted nine saves on the night.
The Seahawks are back in action at the Brown-Bruno Classic beginning February 5.
