Santa Barbra, CA
– The #20 Wagner women's water polo team improved to 2-0 to begin the season for the first time since 2013 with a thrilling 11-10 overtime victory of Cal Baptist.

The Seahawks and Lancers played a tight contest from the opening sprint as neither team ever led by more than two goals at any point in the contest. Wagner was led by their three senior co-captains; Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD/ Broadneck), Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia/ Mountain Creek), and Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA/ San Ramon Valley), who each came through down the stretch to seal the overtime win for the team.

The Green & White did however jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the first stanza as centers Lily Doerfler and Jess Lundgren scored within thirty seconds of each other about midway through the first period.

The Lancers answered back however as Hannah Evans struck on a five-meter penalty shot and Laura Kocsis tallied with 1:46 left in the quarter to tie the game at 2-2.

Doerfler and Lundgren each found the back of the net in the second period with Lundgren tallying on a man-up advantage opportunity. It appeared the Seahawks would enter halftime with a two goal lead however Evans scored with 43 seconds remaining in the quarter to cut the Lancers deficit to one.

Wagner's 4-3 lead was short lived in the second half with Cal Baptist scoring early in the third to tie the game at four.  After fighting for position, Doefler corralled the ball and fired a strike that rattled the cage for her third tally of the contest. Senior attacker Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA/ San Ramon Valley) scored with 1:05 left in the third quarter but it was quickly answered by Evans once again for the Lancers to bring the score to 6-5 after the third period.

Less than 45 seconds into the fourth installment Cal Baptist knotted the game at 6.  Sophomore Lacey Anderson (Thousands Oaks, CA/ Westlake) answered by connecting on her first goal of the early season with 6:45 remaining in regulation. The back and forth fourth quarter action continued as Doerfler and Evans each scored again to bring the score to 8-7 in favor of the Green & White with 2:20 left.  Cal Baptist responded with back-to-back goals to take their first lead of the game with 1:11 remaining in regulation.

With Wagner desperately needing a quick goal, Doerfler answered the bell with a strike that found the net past the goalies outstretched arms to tie the game at 9-9 with only 35 seconds remaining. Doerfler's fifth goal of the contest held for the final 35 seconds to send the game to overtime.

In the first overtime period, the Seahawk seniors came up large, Rodriguez and Lundgren each scored. Lundgren's goal would prove to be the game winner as the Seahawk defense was strong in each overtime set allowing only one goal to claim the 11-10 overtime victory. Junior goalie Emily Riddle (Edmonton, Alberta/ Dr. E.P. Scarlett) had a numerous amount of big saves to help preserve the overtime led for the Seahawks.

Lundgren's performance allowed her to pass Jessica Burdge and sit alone with the second most goals in Seahawk program history with 288.

The win marks head coach Chris Radmonovich's 115th career victory which places him two shy of the program record.
